Book your 99mTc-MDP bone triple-phase scan at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, an NABL and NABH certified diagnostic centre that offers advanced facilities in Nuclear Medicine, Radiology & Pathology. The doctor uses this nuclear scan, which passes through the body with the use of Technetium-99m MDP (99mTc-MDP), to identify bone abnormalities, infections, bone fractures, and other bone-related problems. With advanced imaging systems, our experienced team performs the scan accurately and prepares the reports in a timely manner.
About 99mTc-MDP Bone Triple Phase Scan
The 99mTc-MDP Bone Triple Phase Scan is a nuclear medicine examination that is conducted in three phases to examine blood flow, soft-tissue blood, and bone activity. Doctors use the tracer to see abnormal bone activity. At Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, advanced gamma camera imaging is used to obtain detailed functional information about the bones.
What is a 99mTc-MDP Bone Triple Phase Scan?
A Bone Triple Phase Scan uses a small amount of radioactive 99mTc-MDP tracer injected into a vein. Images are obtained during three phases:
Blood Flow Phase – evaluates blood flow to the area.
Blood Pool Phase – assesses soft-tissue blood pooling.
Delayed Bone Phase – shows tracer uptake in the bones.
The combined images help doctors evaluate both vascular and bone-related abnormalities.
Common Reasons for 99mTc-MDP Bone Triple Phase Scan
Suspected bone infection
Unexplained bone pain
Suspected stress or occult fractures
Evaluation of joint or bone inflammation
Assessment of prosthetic joint complications
Evaluation of bone lesions
Complex musculoskeletal conditions
Follow-up of selected bone disorders
Conditions Evaluated
Bone Infection
Helps detect abnormal bone activity associated with osteomyelitis.
Occult or Stress Fractures
It helps identify fractures that are not clearly visible on conventional X-rays.
Joint and Bone Inflammation
Assesses increased blood flow and bone activity associated with inflammation.
Prosthetic Joint Complications
Supports evaluation of abnormal activity around joint replacements.
Bone Lesions
Helps identify areas of abnormal bone metabolism requiring further evaluation.
Who Should Consider This Scan?
Your doctor recommends a 99mTc-MDP Bone Triple Phase Scan if you:
Have unexplained localized bone pain
Have suspected bone infection
Have a suspected stress or occult fracture
Have persistent joint symptoms
Have an artificial joint with suspected complications
Need functional evaluation of a specific bone or joint

Test information: Fasting not needed.
Reporting: Within 24 hours*
Fasting is usually not required for the 99mTc-MDP Bone Triple Phase Scan.
Stay well hydrated before and after the scan unless your doctor advises otherwise.
Inform the nuclear medicine team if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
Tell the doctor about any relevant bone infection, fracture, joint problem, or recent surgery.
Inform the team about any medicines or ongoing treatments you are taking.
Bring previous X-rays, CT, MRI, bone scans, or other relevant reports if available.
Follow any specific instructions provided by your doctor or nuclear medicine team.
The patient is registered, and the scan details and relevant medical history are verified.
A trained nuclear medicine professional administers a small amount of 99mTc-MDP radiotracer through a vein.
Blood Flow Phase images are obtained immediately after tracer administration to assess blood flow to the selected area.
Blood Pool Phase images are then acquired to evaluate soft-tissue blood pooling.
After an appropriate waiting period, Delayed Bone Phase images are obtained to assess tracer uptake and bone activity.
The patient is positioned appropriately under the gamma camera, and images are acquired according to the required protocol.
The images from all three phases are assessed together to identify areas of abnormal vascular or bone activity.
Relevant clinical history and previous imaging findings may be considered during interpretation.
Appropriate radiation safety and quality-control procedures are followed throughout the examination.
The scan is reviewed and interpreted by the nuclear medicine team.
The procedure is generally well tolerated and does not usually require hospitalization.
