About Iron Test

Iron Test measures the iron that is moving in the blood (serum iron). Iron is a vital mineral used to make the hemoglobin that transports oxygen around the body. Normal iron levels are necessary for healthy blood formation, energy production, and well-being. We perform iron testing with advanced laboratory tests at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy in order to deliver accurate and reliable iron reports.

What is an Iron Test?

An Iron Test is a simple blood test that detects the level of iron in the blood. Often used in conjunction with other iron parameters like Ferritin, Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC), Unsaturated Iron Binding Capacity (UIBC), and Transferrin Saturation to obtain a Complete Iron Status Assessment. This test is used to diagnose iron deficiency, work up anemia, monitor iron treatment, and to diagnose the cause for excess iron.

Common Reasons for an Iron Test

  • Evaluation of iron deficiency anemia
  • Investigation of unexplained fatigue or weakness
  • Assessment of low hemoglobin levels
  • Monitoring iron supplementation
  • Detection of iron overload disorders
  • Evaluation of nutritional deficiencies
  • Investigation of chronic blood loss
  • Routine health assessment

Conditions Evaluated

Iron Deficiency Anemia

Helps diagnose low iron levels that can cause anemia, fatigue, weakness, and reduced exercise tolerance.

Iron Overload (Hemochromatosis)

Detects excessive iron accumulation that can damage the liver, heart, pancreas, and other organs.

Chronic Blood Loss

Assists in evaluating iron depletion caused by gastrointestinal bleeding, heavy menstrual bleeding, or other causes.

Nutritional Iron Deficiency

Helps identify inadequate dietary iron intake or poor iron absorption.

Chronic Diseases

Supports the evaluation of anemia associated with chronic inflammatory or systemic diseases.

Iron Therapy Monitoring

Helps monitor response to iron supplementation and guide ongoing treatment.
