About Mantoux Test

Mantoux test, or TST (Tuberculin Skin Test), is a diagnostic test to diagnose whether an individual has tuberculosis or not. This is achieved by introducing a very small quantity of purified protein derivative (PPD) under the skin on the forearm of the patient and evaluating the reaction for 48 to 72 hours. Personnel who conduct tests are thoroughly trained in a specific manner according to the routine clinical practice, but with main thrusts targeted towards precise assessment of the test being Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy.

What is a Mantoux Test?

The Mantoux test is a very easy, safe, and non-invasive diagnostic screening process that could be used to diagnose latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and/or to assist in diagnosing latent tuberculosis infection LTBI, where symptoms and history and/or investigation could assist in diagnosing TB or diagnosing LTBI.

In case the test result is positive, it means that you have been infected by the bacteria causing TB but not necessarily with an active TB infection. It is possible that further testing such as chest X-rays or sputum tests will be required.

Common Reasons for a Mantoux Test

  • Screening for tuberculosis (TB)
  • Close contact with a person diagnosed with TB
  • Persistent cough lasting more than two weeks
  • Fever, night sweats, or unexplained weight loss
  • Pre-employment or pre-admission health screening
  • Evaluation before starting immunosuppressive therapy
  • Healthcare worker or high-risk occupational screening
  • Screening in individuals with weakened immunity

Conditions Evaluated

Latent Tuberculosis Infection (LTBI)

Helps identify individuals infected with TB bacteria who do not have active disease.

Tuberculosis Exposure

Detects immune response following exposure to Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

High-Risk TB Screening

Assists in screening individuals at increased risk of developing tuberculosis.

Pre-Treatment Evaluation

May be recommended before initiating immunosuppressive medications or organ transplantation.

Occupational Health Screening

Used for healthcare workers and individuals working in environments with increased TB exposure risk.
