Positive AFB smear results provide the first indication of Mycobacterial infection and potential TB disease. Smear-positivity and grade indicate relative bacterial burden and correlate with disease presentation. Patient therapy may be initiated for TB based on smear result and clinical presentation. Changes in smear status are important for monitoring response to therapy.
