Urine Culture

900

Visit Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, an NABL & NABH Accredited Diagnostic Centre for an appointment to undergo a Urine Culture Test. We have a state-of-the-art Microbiology lab, using advanced culture techniques to detect the true culture of the urinary infection by bacteria and fungi, which enables us to have a supply of exact knowledge to fight the infection with the help of Culture and Sensitivity testing about the antibiotic used. Highly trained microbiologists ensure that test results are accurate, reporting is reliable, and results are timely provided to help in early diagnosis and timely treatment.

About Urine Culture Test

Urine Culture Test is a laboratory process to identify bacteria, fungi, or microorganisms that are causing a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). A urine culture is performed, and the urine is cultured in a controlled laboratory environment to identify any microorganisms (organisms that cause infection or the production of organisms) present that might be causing these infections. An Antibiotic Sensitivity Test (AST) may also be done if any microorganisms are identified to determine which antibiotics would be best against which antibiotics the growth is sensitive. Molecular diagnostics and therapy use state-of-the-art microbiological techniques to produce accurate results.

What is a Urine Culture Test?

A urine culture test is a diagnostic test that is used to look at the urine for microorganisms that may cause an infection. This is a test that is performed instead of a midstream urine sample to identify the type of organism causing the infection and to inform the doctor about which antibiotic medicines to use to treat the infection. Can be recommended if a person has UTIs or if they need to use the toilet often or at night.

Common Reasons for a Urine Culture Test

  • Burning sensation during urination
  • Frequent or urgent urination
  • Pain or discomfort while passing urine
  • Lower abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Fever with suspected urinary tract infection
  • Blood in the urine (Hematuria)
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Monitoring response to antibiotic treatment
  • Screening during pregnancy when indicated

Conditions Evaluated

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

Identifies bacterial or fungal infections affecting the urinary tract.

Kidney Infection (Pyelonephritis)

Helps detect infections that may have spread to the kidneys.

Bladder Infection (Cystitis)

Evaluates infections involving the urinary bladder.

Recurrent Urinary Infections

Helps identify persistent or repeated urinary infections and guides appropriate treatment.

Antibiotic Resistance

Determines which antibiotics are effective against the identified microorganism through culture and sensitivity testing.

Catheter-Associated Urinary Infection

Detects infections in patients using urinary catheters.

Who Should Consider This Test?

Your doctor may recommend a Urine Culture Test if you:

  • Experience burning or pain during urination
  • Have frequent or urgent urination
  • Have recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Have fever with suspected urinary infection
  • Are pregnant with symptoms of a UTI
  • Need evaluation before or after antibiotic treatment
  • Have persistent urinary symptoms despite medication

Benefits of Urine Culture Test

  • Accurately identifies the microorganism causing infection
  • Helps select the most effective antibiotic treatment
  • Detects bacterial and fungal urinary infections
  • Assists in diagnosing recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Supports early diagnosis and appropriate treatment
  • Helps reduce unnecessary antibiotic use

Test information: Morning 1st mid stream urine

Reporting: Within 72 hours*

  • No fasting is required for a Urine Culture Test.
  • A clean-catch, midstream urine sample is recommended for accurate results. Follow the sample collection instructions provided by your doctor or the diagnostic centre.
  • Before collecting the sample, wash your hands and clean the genital area with clean water or as instructed to reduce contamination.
  • Collect the midstream urine in a sterile container. Avoid touching the inside of the container or lid.
  • If possible, collect the urine sample before starting antibiotics, as antibiotics may affect the growth of microorganisms and influence the test results. If you are already taking antibiotics, inform your doctor or the laboratory.
  • An early morning urine sample is often preferred, but a freshly collected sample at any time may be acceptable if advised by your doctor.
  • Deliver the urine sample to the laboratory within 1–2 hours of collection. If there is any delay, refrigerate the sample as instructed by the laboratory.
  • Inform your doctor if you have a urinary catheter, recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney disease, are pregnant, or have recently undergone urinary tract procedures.
  • Bring your doctor's prescription and any previous urine culture, urine routine examination, or antibiotic sensitivity reports, if available.
