Get your CEMRI Extremities at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, an NABL- and NABH-certified, well-equipped diagnostic centre. We offer advanced services in Radiology and Imaging. CEMRI Extremities offers an MRI scan of the selected limb/extremity (one) that can give a detailed view of the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and surrounding soft tissues.
About CEMRI Extremities
A specialized type of MRI exam that focuses on the arms or legs, called CEMRI Extremities. The exam can give specific details of soft tissue conditions, inflammation, infection, masses, and more in the extremities. A scan may be recommended if a previous imaging scan has found an abnormality and/or a detailed contrast-enhanced evaluation is needed.
What is CEMRI Extremities?
Contrast-Enhanced MRI of the Extremities uses MRI with intravenous contrast material when clinically indicated to provide additional information about tissues and abnormalities. It employs powerful magnets together with radio waves to generate high-resolution pictures of the chosen extremity. During the exam, a contrast agent is used to highlight some tissue and abnormalities so that the doctor can judge the extent and location of the abnormality and the appearance of the tissues.
Common Reasons for CEMRI Extremities
Persistent or unexplained pain in an extremity
Swelling or tenderness
Evaluation of a soft-tissue mass or lesion
Suspected infection or inflammation
Suspected bone or bone marrow abnormality
Assessment of muscle, tendon, or ligament problems
Evaluation of joint abnormalities
Further assessment of abnormalities detected on previous imaging
Follow-up of a known lesion or previous treatment
Assessment of post-surgical or post-treatment changes
Conditions Evaluated
Bone and Bone Marrow Abnormalities
CEMRI can provide detailed information about the bones and bone marrow of the selected extremity, helping evaluate edema, inflammation, infection, lesions, and other abnormalities.
Muscle and Soft-Tissue Abnormalities
The examination provides detailed visualization of muscles and soft tissues and can help assess injuries, inflammation, masses, and other structural changes.
Tendon and Ligament Abnormalities
MRI can evaluate tendons and ligaments for tears, inflammation, degeneration, and other abnormalities.
Soft-Tissue Masses
Contrast enhancement can help characterize soft-tissue masses and lesions by showing their size, location, extent, and enhancement pattern.
Infection and Inflammation
CEMRI may assist in evaluating suspected infection or inflammatory changes involving the bones, joints, muscles, or surrounding soft tissues.
Joint Abnormalities
The examination can assess joints of the selected extremity for structural changes, inflammation, fluid, and other abnormalities.
Tumours and Other Lesions
Contrast-enhanced MRI can assist in evaluating suspected bone and soft-tissue tumours and determining their relationship with surrounding structures.
Who Should Consider This MRI?
For patients with persistent pain or swelling, with suspected infected or unexplained soft-tissue changes or known lesions, patients may be a candidate for CEMRI Extremities, which may be indicated for detailed contrast-enhanced evaluation of an arm or leg. It may also be suggested if a previous imaging test found an abnormality that needs to be further characterized.
Benefits of CEMRI Extremities

Inform the staff if pain, swelling, stiffness, or restricted movement makes positioning difficult.
Remain still during image acquisition to reduce motion-related image distortion.
Report any unusual symptoms such as itching, swelling, dizziness, breathing difficulty, nausea, or discomfort after contrast administration.

The medical team reviews the patient’s symptoms, medical history, previous investigations, and clinical indication for CEMRI of the selected extremity.
MRI safety screening is performed to identify pacemakers, implants, surgical clips, metallic fragments, or other devices that may affect MRI safety.
The patient is positioned comfortably on the MRI table, and an appropriate dedicated coil is placed around the selected extremity.
Initial MRI sequences are obtained using a strong magnetic field and radio waves to evaluate the bones, bone marrow, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and surrounding soft tissues.
An intravenous line is placed, and a gadolinium-based contrast agent is administered when contrast-enhanced imaging is clinically indicated and an appropriate safety assessment has been completed.
Additional post-contrast sequences are obtained to assess abnormal enhancement, inflammation, infection, masses, lesions, vascularized areas, and post-surgical or post-treatment changes.
Images are acquired in multiple planes and sequences to determine the location, size, extent, and relationship of any abnormality with surrounding structures.
Specific imaging sequences may be performed according to the selected extremity and the clinical indication.
The patient is instructed to remain still during image acquisition to maintain image quality and reduce motion-related distortion.
