Get your MRI Arthrogram at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, an NABL & NABH-accredited diagnostic centre.MRI Arthrogram is an advanced and specialized imaging examination that provides detailed evaluation of a joint and its internal structures. A contrast agent is introduced into the joint to improve visualization of structures such as cartilage, labrum, ligaments, and other soft tissues. The examination is performed using advanced MRI technology under the supervision of experienced radiologists.

About MRI ARTHROGRAM

MRI Arthrogram is a specialized MRI examination used when detailed evaluation of the internal structures of a joint is required. It can provide additional information about subtle joint abnormalities that may not be clearly visualized on routine imaging. The examination may be performed for the shoulder, hip, wrist, knee, ankle, or another joint depending on the clinical requirement.

What is MRI ARTHROGRAM?

An MRI Arthrogram combines joint contrast administration with MRI imaging. A small amount of contrast material is introduced into the joint space under image guidance, followed by detailed MRI sequences. This technique can improve visualization of the joint capsule, cartilage, labrum, ligaments, tendons, and other intra-articular structures.

Common Reasons for MRI ARTHROGRAM

  • Evaluation of suspected labral tears
  • Assessment of cartilage abnormalities
  • Evaluation of ligament injuries
  • Investigation of persistent joint pain
  • Assessment of suspected internal joint derangement
  • Evaluation of recurrent joint instability
  • Further assessment when routine MRI is inconclusive
  • Preoperative evaluation of selected joint conditions

Conditions Evaluated

Labral Abnormalities

MRI Arthrogram can provide detailed visualization of the labrum and help assess suspected tears or other abnormalities.

Cartilage Abnormalities

The examination can help evaluate the articular cartilage and selected cartilage defects.

Ligament Injuries

MRI Arthrogram can assist in assessing selected ligament abnormalities and internal joint structures.

Joint Instability

The examination can help evaluate structural abnormalities associated with recurrent or suspected joint instability.

Internal Joint Derangement

Detailed contrast-enhanced imaging can help assess selected abnormalities within the joint.

Who Should Consider This Scan?

Your doctor may recommend an MRI Arthrogram if you have:

  • Persistent or unexplained joint pain
  • Suspected labral or cartilage abnormality
  • Recurrent joint instability
  • Suspected ligament injury
  • Abnormal findings on previous imaging
  • Symptoms that remain unexplained after routine imaging
  • A need for detailed preoperative joint assessment

Benefits of MRI ARTHROGRAM

  • Detailed visualization of internal joint structures
  • Improved assessment of selected labral and cartilage abnormalities
  • Evaluation of ligaments and joint capsule
  • No ionizing radiation
  • Helps provide additional information when routine imaging is inconclusive
  • Supports treatment planning and follow-up when clinically indicated

Test information: Fasting: 4–6 hours

Reporting: Within 24 hours*

  • Fast for 4–6 hours before the examination, unless otherwise advised by your doctor or imaging centre.
  • Essential medicines may usually be taken with a small amount of water unless your doctor advises otherwise.
  • Inform the radiology team about any pacemaker, implanted device, aneurysm clip, cochlear implant, metal fragment, or other metallic implant.
  • Inform the team about any previous reaction to contrast agents.
  • Inform your doctor or radiology team if you have kidney disease or reduced kidney function, particularly if intravenous contrast may also be required.
  • Inform the team if you are pregnant or may be pregnant.
  • Inform the team about any infection, skin condition, recent injury, surgery, injection, or procedure involving the joint being examined.
  • Bring previous MRI, CT, X-ray, ultrasound, or other relevant joint imaging reports for comparison.
  • Remove jewelry, watches, belts, and other metallic objects before the MRI examination.
  • Wear comfortable clothing without metal components where possible.
  • Follow any additional instructions provided by the radiologist or imaging team regarding the joint injection and MRI examination.
