Get your MRI Chest with Contrast at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, an NABL & NABH-accredited diagnostic centre offering advanced Radiology and Imaging services. It is a special type of MRI, which is used to get detailed views of the chest and other soft tissues in and around the chest to evaluate abnormalities in the chest wall, mediastinum (the area between the lungs), muscles, blood vessels, and other structures.
About MRI Chest with Contrast
MRI Chest with Contrast is a specific imaging test to be used when detailed evaluation of the soft-tissue composition of various internal structures of the chest is needed. Contrast enhancement can give more information regarding masses, inflammation, infection, vascular structures, and other abnormalities. Additional imaging is recommended when previous imaging has shown an abnormality that requires further evaluation or additional testing is needed.
What is MRI Chest with Contrast?
MRI Chest with Contrast uses a strong magnetic field coupled with radio waves to create detailed images of the chest. Gadolinium-based contrast material may be administered intravenously when clinically indicated to enhance the visibility of certain tissues and abnormalities, making them easier to see. The scan can give comprehensive details about the soft tissues, blood vessels, chest wall, mediastinum, and other structures in the chest.
Common Reasons for MRI Chest with Contrast
Evaluation of a chest mass or lesion
Further evaluation of selected chest-wall or other chest abnormalities when clinically indicated
Evaluation of chest wall abnormalities
Suspected infection or inflammation
Assessment of mediastinal abnormalities
Evaluation of soft-tissue lesions
Assessment of blood vessels and vascular structures
Further evaluation of abnormalities detected on CT or other imaging
Follow-up of a known lesion or previous treatment
Assessment of post-surgical or post-treatment changes
Conditions Evaluated
Chest Wall Abnormalities
MRI can provide detailed images of the chest wall, including muscles, soft tissues, and other structures, helping evaluate masses, inflammation, and other abnormalities.
Soft-Tissue Masses
Contrast-enhanced MRI can help characterize soft-tissue masses by assessing their location, size, extent, and enhancement pattern.
Mediastinal Abnormalities
The examination can assist in evaluating certain abnormalities within the mediastinum and their relationship with surrounding structures.
Infection and Inflammation
MRI with contrast can help identify inflammatory changes and certain infections involving the chest wall and surrounding soft tissues.
Vascular Abnormalities
Contrast enhancement can provide useful information about blood vessels and vascularized lesions within the chest.
Tumours and Other Lesions
MRI may assist in evaluating suspected chest masses and lesions and determining their extent and involvement of adjacent structures.
Post-Surgical and Treatment Changes
The examination may be used to assess changes following surgery, treatment, or other medical procedures and to evaluate persistent or recurrent abnormalities.
Benefits of MRI Chest with Contrast

Remove jewellery, watches, belts, hair accessories, and other metallic or magnetic objects before entering the MRI room.
Wear comfortable clothing and follow the instructions for positioning.
Inform the MRI team if you have difficulty lying flat, breathing comfortably, or remaining in the required position.
Follow breathing and breath-holding instructions during image acquisition when required.
Remain still during the examination to obtain clear images.
Inform the medical team immediately if you experience unusual discomfort or symptoms after contrast administration.

The patient’s symptoms, medical history, previous treatment, and clinical indication are reviewed before the examination.
MRI safety screening is performed to identify implants, devices, metal fragments, or other factors that may affect MRI safety.
The patient is positioned comfortably with the chest appropriately aligned for imaging.
A suitable MRI coil is positioned over the chest to obtain detailed images.
Initial MRI sequences are acquired to evaluate the chest wall, muscles, soft tissues, mediastinal structures, and other relevant areas.
An intravenous line is established for administration of the contrast agent when contrast-enhanced imaging is clinically indicated.
Gadolinium-based contrast material is administered after appropriate safety assessment, including consideration of previous contrast reactions and kidney function.
Additional contrast-enhanced MRI sequences are obtained to evaluate abnormal enhancement, masses, lesions, inflammation, infection, vascularized areas, and post-surgical or post-treatment changes when clinically indicated.
Images may be obtained in multiple planes to assess the location, size, extent, and relationship of abnormalities with surrounding structures.
Breathing or breath-holding instructions may be given during selected sequences to reduce motion and respiratory-related image distortion.
The patient should remain as still as possible throughout image acquisition.
After contrast administration, the patient may be observed briefly according to the centre's protocol.
The images are reviewed by a radiologist and interpreted along with symptoms, clinical findings, previous investigations, and relevant medical history.
Appropriate MRI and contrast-safety protocols are followed throughout the examination.
