About MRI Duplicate Film
For patients who require their MRI to be duplicated so they can receive it twice. Duplicating films can be helpful if patients require viewing of previous images or a second opinion, or if they require the original images for reference when new imaging is taken.
What is MRI Duplicate Film?
The MRI Duplicate Film is a reprint of images that were printed at a previous Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan. These images are all obtained from the archived material and do not require a second exposure of the patient to MRI. The copies may be made for medical consultation, for treatment planning, for follow-up assessment, or for specialist referral. It can be used when the MRI image data is retained and can be recovered.
Common Reasons for MRI Duplicate Film
Extra Personal Copy: Any patient may need another copy of his or her MRI for their individual medical file.
Specialist Consultation: If another doctor/specialist wishes to review the film to assist in their evaluation, then this is available to be duplicated.
Follow-Ups: During follow-up visits, the doctor may be able to compare the results of the scan with previous scans.
Hospital or Clinic Submission: If the patient needs a duplicate image as part of the hospital/clinic submission, you will need to request one.
Medical Record Maintenance: An additional copy to assist the patient in maintaining his/her medical imaging records.
Uses of MRI Duplicate Film
Specialist Consultation
Multiple MRI films enable patients to share their past imaging data with other specialists from whom treatment is being discussed or who may have to review the prior imaging to understand the patient's presenting symptoms.
Second Medical Opinion
If the patient or attending doctor wants to obtain another opinion, copies of the imaging should be sent to another radiologist or attending doctor.
Follow-Up Comparison
To help judge progression of a known condition, and/or to assess the effects of treatment, previous MRIs can be compared to newer MRIs.
Treatment Planning
Prior MR images might be provided as a useful adjunct to provide additional context to assess further testing, treatment, or surgical planning.
Personal Medical Records
Duplicating films allows patients to have access to their old diagnostic imaging.
