Schedule an appointment for MRI Extremities Elbow at the Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, an NABL & NABH-accredited diagnostic centre providing cutting-edge diagnostics and radiology facilities. MRI of the elbow can provide a detailed image of all of the bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and other soft tissues around the elbow joint. It helps evaluate elbow pain and swelling, sports injuries, ligament or tendon injuries, and restricted movement. The exam can be helpful for the diagnosis of soft tissue and bone conditions, helping physicians decide on the relevant treatment.
About MRI Extremities Elbow
MRI Extremities Elbow is a type of MRI scan that can be done to the elbow and nearby tissues. It can assist in detecting abnormal tendon and ligament changes, cartilage problems, muscle tissues, along with bone marrow issues that may not be completely captured by standard X-rays. The scan is helpful in assessing elbow pain conditions due to trauma, overuse, inflammation, and other conditions causing elbow pain or decreased mobility. Both Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy will implement appropriate imaging protocols that support careful visualization and accurate reporting of diagnoses.
What is MRI Extremities Elbow?
MRI Extremities Elbow is a high-magnetic-strength core and radio wave technology procedure done to produce high-quality images of the elbow area without the use of X-rays or other highly ionizing radiation. The scan can evaluate the joint surfaces, surrounding soft tissues, supporting ligaments, tendons, and adjacent bones depending on clinical indication. The exam is usually an “X-ray” exam, that is, one that does not routinely require the use of a special dye or contrast material. The patient should be lying in a very comfortable position as the image is being taken. A radiologist examines the images and tries to tell the treating doctor what is wrong with the patient's body and what he/she might need to do.
Common Reasons for MRI Extremities Elbow
Persistent elbow pain: Investigates ongoing discomfort when further assessment of the joint or surrounding soft tissues is needed.
Ligament injuries: Evaluates possible damage to the ligaments that support elbow stability.
Tendon disorders: Helps assess tendinitis, tendon tears, and overuse injuries.
Sports-related injuries: Examines soft-tissue and joint injuries associated with throwing, lifting, or repetitive arm movements.
Swelling and inflammation: Helps investigate symptoms that may be related to joint or soft-tissue abnormalities.
Restricted movement: Assesses possible structural causes of stiffness or difficulty bending and straightening the elbow.
Suspected cartilage or bone marrow abnormalities: Evaluates selected conditions affecting the joint surfaces or internal bone structure.
Post-traumatic assessment: Provides additional detail when symptoms continue after an elbow injury.
Conditions Evaluated
Ligament Injuries
MRI could be useful to show whether the ligaments that secure the movement of the elbow joint have suffered sprains or partial or full tears. This may have implications in patients with pain or instability of a particular joint.
Tendon Injuries and Tendinopathy
MRI might be useful to check for abnormalities at the outside or inside of the elbow's lateral or medial surface. They may lead to pain in the wrist when gripping, lifting, ing and/or repetitive wrist use.
Tennis Elbow and Golfer’s Elbow
MRI can be useful for evaluating abnormalities with the tendons on the outside or inside of the elbow. They may lead to pain when grasping, lifting, or using the wrists over and over again.
Cartilage and Joint Abnormalities
MRI may yield detailed images of the cartilage and other structures in the joints, which can be useful in evaluating specific injuries to cartilage, internal joint abnormalities, and help to assess joint inflammation.
Bone Marrow and Occult Injuries
MRI can reveal changes in the bone marrow and some injuries, such as selected stress injuries and bone bruising that aren't visible in traditional X-rays.
Muscle and Soft-Tissue Abnormalities
During the scan, the muscles and surrounding soft tissues can be evaluated for injury, inflammation, or other changes that could be playing a role in elbow pain and/or dysfunction.
Benefits of MRI Extremities Elbow
Provides detailed images of the elbow joint and surrounding soft tissues.
Helps evaluate ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and muscles.
Can identify selected injuries that may not be apparent on X-rays.
Does not use ionizing radiation.
Supports assessment of sports injuries and repetitive-strain conditions.
Helps doctors plan appropriate treatment and further evaluation.
Why Choose Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy?
Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy is an NABL & NABH Accredited Diagnostic Centre that provides all the diagnostic facilities under one roof and has an ambulatory treatment wing. Cutting-edge imaging and optimized imaging protocols will be used to achieve a customized imaging outcome, with the centre's radiology staff also being highly trained to provide competent imaging diagnosis reporting. Even in the diagnostic process, the focus remains on patient comfort, safety procedures, efficient coordination, and clear pricing.
Book Your MRI Extremities Elbow
If your doctor has advised you to have an MRI Extremities Elbow scan because you may have pain that is not subsiding, use of the ligaments or tendons is considered likely or suspected, swelling, and limited range of movement, Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy will discuss the availability of appointments, preparation times, and reporting.
Test information: Usually, no fasting is required.
Reporting: Within 24 hours*
Usually, no fasting is required for an NCCT Right Elbow scan.
Inform the radiology team about any previous right elbow surgery, fracture, dislocation, injury, or treatment.
Inform the radiology team if you have metallic implants, plates, screws, fixation devices, or other medical hardware in or around the right elbow.
Inform the radiology team if you are pregnant, suspect pregnancy, or are planning a pregnancy, as CT uses ionising radiation.
Share details of your current medicines and any relevant medical conditions.
Bring previous CT scans, X-rays, MRI scans, or other relevant elbow reports, if available.
Remove watches, bracelets, jewellery, and other unnecessary metal objects from the right arm before the examination, as advised.
Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the right elbow.
Inform the radiology team if severe pain, swelling, or restricted movement makes it difficult to position your right arm.
Keep your right elbow and arm still during image acquisition to help obtain clear images.
Follow any additional instructions provided by the radiology team according to your clinical condition.

The radiology team reviews the patient's clinical history, symptoms, previous investigations, and reason for the NCCT Right Elbow examination.
The patient is positioned appropriately on the CT table, with the right elbow placed according to the imaging protocol.
Thin-section non-contrast CT images of the right elbow are acquired using X-rays.
The scan evaluates the distal humerus, proximal radius, proximal ulna, elbow joint surfaces, and surrounding bony structures.
The images are assessed for fractures, bone fragments, joint dislocation, alignment abnormalities, complex intra-articular injuries, degenerative bony changes, bone lesions, and other structural abnormalities.
The joint surfaces and alignment of the elbow bones are evaluated when clinically indicated.
Multiplanar or three-dimensional reconstructions may be prepared when required for detailed assessment of complex fractures or treatment planning.
No intravenous contrast agent is used for a standard NCCT Right Elbow examination.
The patient should remain still during image acquisition to reduce motion-related image blurring.
Appropriate radiation-safety measures and a suitable CT protocol are followed to minimise unnecessary radiation exposure.
The acquired images are reviewed and interpreted by a qualified radiologist.
