Get your MRI Placenta at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, an NABL- and NABH-accredited diagnostic centre. This specialized MRI examination provides detailed imaging of the placenta and its relationship with the uterus and surrounding pelvic structures. It can be used when detailed assessment of placental location, attachment, or suspected placental abnormalities is required. With advanced MRI technology and experienced radiologists, we provide accurate and reliable imaging reports.
About MRI Placenta
MRI Placenta is an examination performed during pregnancy when additional information about the placenta is needed. In an MRI scan, detailed soft tissue images are obtained and can complement ultrasound findings in selected clinical situations. No ionizing radiation is generally involved in this examination, but it may be recommended by the treating obstetrician or specialist when clinically indicated.
What is MRI Placenta?
During the examination, the patient lies comfortably on the MRI table while images of the uterus, placenta, and surrounding pelvic structures are obtained. Multiple MRI sequences are performed to evaluate placental location, appearance, and its relationship with the uterine wall and adjacent structures. Contrast is generally not required for routine placental MRI unless specifically indicated by the treating specialist.
Common Reasons for MRI Placenta
Detailed assessment of placental location
Evaluation of suspected abnormal placental attachment
Assessment of suspected placenta accreta spectrum
Further evaluation when ultrasound findings are inconclusive
Assessment of the relationship between the placenta and uterine wall
Evaluation of suspected placental or uterine abnormalities
Preoperative assessment in selected high-risk pregnancies
Conditions Evaluated
Placenta Accreta Spectrum
MRI can provide additional information about suspected abnormal placental attachment and its relationship with the uterine wall.
Placental Location
The examination can help assess the position and extent of the placenta within the uterus.
Placental Invasion
MRI may assist in evaluating the depth and extent of suspected placental invasion when clinically required.
Placental and Uterine Abnormalities
Detailed MRI images can help assess abnormalities involving the placenta, uterus, and surrounding pelvic structures.
Who Should Consider This Scan?
Your doctor may recommend an MRI Placenta if you have:
A placenta located in a position requiring further evaluation
A previous uterine surgery or procedure with concern for placental attachment
Findings that require additional imaging before delivery
An inconclusive or limited ultrasound examination
A high-risk pregnancy requiring detailed placental assessment
Benefits of MRI Placenta
Detailed soft-tissue imaging
No ionizing radiation
Provides additional information when ultrasound is inconclusive
Helps assess the placenta and its relationship with surrounding structures
Useful in selected high-risk pregnancies
Supports clinical and surgical planning when required

Fasting is not required for routine MRI Placenta.
Take regular medicines as prescribed by your treating doctor unless advised otherwise.
Inform the MRI team about your pregnancy and current gestational age before the examination.
Inform the radiologist about any previous uterine surgery, caesarean section, or other pelvic procedure.
Inform the MRI team if you have any metal implants, pacemaker, aneurysm clips, cochlear implants, or other implanted medical devices.
Remove jewellery, watches, hair accessories, and other metal objects before entering the MRI room.
Wear comfortable clothing without metal components where possible.
Carry recent ultrasound reports, antenatal records, previous imaging, and relevant medical documents.
Follow any specific positioning or preparation instructions provided by the radiologist or treating obstetrician.
Contrast is generally not required for routine MRI Placenta. If contrast is being considered for a specific clinical reason, the decision should be made by the treating specialist and radiologist after appropriate assessment.
The patient's pregnancy details, clinical history, symptoms, and available ultrasound or previous imaging reports are reviewed before the examination.
MRI safety screening is performed to identify any metallic implants or implanted medical devices.
The patient is positioned comfortably on the MRI table, taking pregnancy-related comfort and positioning into consideration.
The uterus, placenta, and surrounding pelvic structures are positioned appropriately within the MRI imaging coil.
Multiple MRI sequences are obtained to evaluate the location, appearance, and extent of the placenta and its relationship with the uterine wall and adjacent structures.
The patient is instructed to remain as still as possible during image acquisition. Breathing instructions may be provided when required.
Routine MRI Placenta is generally performed without contrast.
MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves and does not involve ionizing radiation.
The images are reviewed and interpreted by an experienced radiologist in correlation with the clinical information and ultrasound findings.
Reporting: Within 24 hours.
