Get your MRI Skeletogram at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, which is an NABL- and NABH-accredited diagnostic centre providing advanced MRI, Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, and Pathology services. MRI Skeletogram offers excellent visualization of the skeletal system and can be used to assess bones, bone marrow, joints, and surrounding soft tissue for a range of abnormalities.
About MRI Skeletogram
MRI Skeletogram is a detailed scan of many areas of the skeleton. It is specific and can include information regarding the surrounding muscles, joints, and soft tissues, and can help the doctor determine pathological or structural changes in the bone and bone marrow.
What is an MRI Skeletogram?
MRI Skeletogram employs magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of specific parts of the skeleton. It may assist in uncovering defects of the bone, bone marrow, and related soft tissues. The clinical requirement may dictate the regions of the skeleton that should be examined.
Common Reasons for MRI Skeletogram
MRI Skeletogram may be advised for:
Evaluation of unexplained bone pain
Suspected bone or bone marrow abnormalities
Assessment of multiple skeletal lesions
Suspected fractures or bone injuries
Evaluation of infection or inflammation
Assessment of bone tumours or lesions
Evaluation of joint and surrounding soft-tissue abnormalities
Follow-up of known skeletal conditions
Assessment of treatment response
Further evaluation of abnormalities detected on other imaging
Conditions Evaluated
Bone and Bone Marrow Abnormalities
MRI provides detailed visualization of bone marrow and can help identify abnormal changes that may not be clearly seen on routine X-rays.
Bone Tumours and Lesions
The examination can help detect and characterize suspicious bone lesions and assess their relationship with surrounding tissues.
Bone Injuries and Fractures
MRI can assist in evaluating certain fractures, stress injuries, and other bone abnormalities, particularly when initial imaging is inconclusive.
Bone Infection and Inflammation
MRI can help identify inflammatory changes and suspected infections involving bones and surrounding soft tissues.
Joint Abnormalities
Depending on the areas examined, MRI can provide detailed information about joints, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and surrounding soft tissues.

Test information: Usually, no fasting is required.
Reporting: None
Usually, no fasting is required for a routine MRI Skeletogram examination.
Follow any specific instructions provided by the medical team before the scan.
Inform the MRI team about any pacemaker, implanted medical device, surgical clips, artificial joints, medication pumps, or other metallic implants.
Inform the team if you have ever had a metallic fragment injury, particularly involving the eyes.
Inform the medical team about any previous surgery, injury, biopsy, or treatment involving the bones, joints, or soft tissues being examined.
Provide details of all current medicines and supplements.
If contrast-enhanced imaging is planned, inform the medical team about any previous contrast reaction or kidney disease/reduced kidney function.
Inform the team if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
Bring previous MRI, CT, X-ray, ultrasound reports, bone scans, prescriptions, and other relevant medical records.
Remove jewellery, watches, belts, hair accessories, and other metallic or magnetic objects before entering the MRI room.
Wear comfortable clothing suitable for the examination.
Inform the staff if pain, stiffness, or restricted movement makes it difficult to maintain the required position.
Remain still during image acquisition to reduce motion-related image distortion.
The medical team reviews the patient’s symptoms, medical history, previous investigations, and clinical indication for MRI Skeletogram.
MRI safety screening is performed to identify pacemakers, implants, surgical clips, metallic fragments, or other devices that may affect MRI safety.
The regions of the skeleton to be examined are identified according to the clinical indication and imaging protocol.
The patient is positioned appropriately on the MRI table, and suitable coils are used for the selected skeletal regions.
MRI sequences are obtained using a strong magnetic field and radio waves to produce detailed images of the bones and bone marrow. MRI does not use ionizing radiation.
The examination may include assessment of bone marrow, cortical bone, joints, cartilage, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and surrounding soft tissues depending on the areas being evaluated.
Multiple imaging sequences and planes are performed to assess suspected lesions, fractures, marrow abnormalities, infection, inflammation, tumours, or other skeletal changes.
If contrast-enhanced imaging is clinically indicated, an intravenous line may be placed and a gadolinium-based contrast agent administered after appropriate safety assessment.
Additional post-contrast images may be obtained to evaluate abnormal enhancement, inflammatory or infectious changes, masses, lesions, and treatment-related abnormalities.
The patient is instructed to remain still during image acquisition to maintain image quality and reduce motion-related distortion.
The radiologist reviews the images in correlation with the patient’s symptoms, clinical findings, medical history, and previous investigations.
Appropriate MRI and, when applicable, contrast-agent safety protocols are followed throughout the examination.
