UROFLOWMETRY

₹1500

Uroflowmetry is a simple, non-invasive urological test that provides the flow rate and pattern of urine, and it determines the effectiveness of bladder emptying. It provides helpful information about possible urinary obstruction, weak bladder function, or other lower urinary tract problems. Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy uses specialised equipment to record the flow of urine (uroflowmetry). The findings could be used to guide a doctor's procedure for evaluating symptoms of the urinary system and decide if additional urological testing is needed.

About Uroflowmetry

Uroflowmetry is a test that measures how quickly urine passes out of the bladder and the amount of urine that has been passed. This test records maximum and average urine flow rate, voided volume, and urination duration. Uroflowmetry is not done on a urine sample and is different from standard urine testing. Rather, the patient urinates into a special flowmeter shielded from view, which automatically records the urinary flow pattern.

What is Uroflowmetry?

During this test, a specially designed device for uroflowmetry measures the patient's urine flow, and the machine records the urine flow, creating a graphical record of the urine flow pattern. The facts obtained are compared with the clinical history and symptoms. The standard test, which does not use needles, radiation, or intrusive instrumentation, so it does not take much time to conduct.

Common Reasons for Uroflowmetry

  • Difficulty starting urination
  • Weak or slow urine stream
  • Frequent urination
  • Urgency to urinate
  • Interrupted or irregular urine flow
  • Feeling that the bladder has not emptied completely
  • Straining during urination
  • Evaluation of suspected urinary obstruction
  • Follow-up of certain urinary or urological conditions

Conditions Evaluated

Urinary Tract Obstruction

Uroflowmetry can provide information about reduced or abnormal urine flow that may occur with obstruction in the urinary tract.

Enlarged Prostate

In men, the test may be used as part of the evaluation of urinary symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate.

Bladder Dysfunction

Abnormal flow patterns may provide useful information when bladder emptying problems are suspected.

Urethral Narrowing

The test may support evaluation when narrowing of the urethra is suspected based on urinary symptoms.

Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms

Uroflowmetry can help assess symptoms such as weak stream, urgency, frequency, or incomplete bladder emptying.

Who Should Consider This Test?

Your doctor may recommend Uroflowmetry if you:

  • Have a weak or slow urine stream
  • Experience difficulty starting urination
  • Frequently need to urinate or experience sudden urgency
  • Feel that your bladder does not empty completely
  • Have interrupted urine flow
  • Need assessment of urinary symptoms related to prostate or urethral problems.
  • Require follow-up evaluation after treatment for certain urinary conditions.

Benefits of Uroflowmetry

  • Non-invasive and generally painless
  • Does not involve radiation
  • Measures urine flow objectively
  • Helps assess bladder emptying and urinary flow
  • Provides a graphical record of the urinary flow pattern
  • Can support further urological evaluation and treatment planning

Important Preparation Instructions

  • Follow the instructions provided by the medical team before the examination.
  • You may be asked to arrive with a comfortably full bladder.
  • Drink water as advised rather than consuming excessive amounts at once.
  • Do not intentionally hold urine for an unusually long period unless instructed.
  • Inform the medical team about your current urinary symptoms and medications.
  • Bring previous urological reports or investigation results if available.
  • Try to urinate normally and naturally during the test.
