The Faros 180 by Mega Electronics Ltd. is a compact ambulatory ECG monitoring system designed for continuous recording of cardiac electrical activity during everyday activities. Unlike a conventional resting ECG, which captures the heart's electrical activity over a short examination period, Holter monitoring allows ECG data to be collected continuously over an extended period.

The Faros 180 is a single-channel ECG Holter recorder designed for ambulatory monitoring. Its small, lightweight construction allows the device to be worn by the patient while carrying out normal daily activities. The system records ECG data digitally and can also capture R-R interval information and movement data through its integrated accelerometer.

Continuous Ambulatory ECG Monitoring

The primary function of the Faros 180 is continuous ECG recording outside the conventional clinical environment. The device records a single ECG channel through electrodes positioned on the patient's chest. Continuous monitoring can provide information that may not be captured during a short resting ECG examination.

Changes in heart rhythm can occur intermittently, during physical activity, during sleep, or at different points throughout the day. Extended ECG recording therefore provides a larger window for reviewing cardiac rhythm. The Faros 180 has been used for 24-hour and longer ECG monitoring in clinical and research settings, with documented recordings at sampling rates of up to 1,000 Hz.

Single-Channel ECG Recording

The Faros 180 is specifically designed as a 1-channel ECG device. It can acquire ECG through a suitable electrode configuration using adhesive electrodes or compatible chest-worn arrangements. The current Faros documentation distinguishes the 180 from the Faros 360: the Faros 180 provides one ECG channel, whereas the Faros 360 can provide up to three ECG channels. This distinction is important when specifying the system for clinical use. Single-channel ambulatory ECG recording is suitable for continuous rhythm monitoring and heart-rate-related analysis where extended recording duration and patient mobility are important considerations.

High-Resolution ECG Sampling

The Faros 180 supports multiple ECG sampling frequencies, including 100, 125, 250, 500, and 1,000 Hz in the documented specifications. The device also provides a 1,000 Hz sampling rate for R-R interval and heart-rate-variability applications. A higher sampling frequency allows the recorded ECG signal to be represented with greater temporal resolution. This can be particularly useful when analysing R-wave timing and beat-to-beat intervals. The Faros 180 has also been used in published research at both 500 Hz and 1,000 Hz, demonstrating its application for continuous ECG and heart-rate-variability recording.

R-R Interval and Heart Rate Variability

In addition to recording the ECG waveform, the Faros 180 supports R-R interval measurement. R-R intervals represent the time between successive cardiac cycles and provide the basis for several heart-rate and heart-rate-variability analyses. Heart Rate Variability (HRV) describes variations in the intervals between successive heartbeats. Continuous R-R interval recording can therefore provide additional physiological information alongside the ECG waveform. The Faros 180 has been used in research involving HRV analysis, including recordings performed over extended periods.

Integrated Three-Axis Accelerometer

The Faros 180 incorporates a three-axis accelerometer for recording movement and activity information. The accelerometer can capture movement along different axes, allowing ECG recordings to be considered alongside physical activity. The documented Faros specifications provide selectable accelerometer sampling frequencies ranging from 10 Hz to 400 Hz, depending on the configured recording mode. The accelerometer uses a 14-bit analogue-to-digital converter in the Faros 180. Activity information can be useful when reviewing an ambulatory recording because changes in heart rate and rhythm can be considered in relation to patient movement.

Compact Wearable Design

One of the defining characteristics of the Faros 180 is its small physical footprint. The documented specifications list dimensions of approximately 48 × 29 × 12 mm and a weight of approximately 13 grams. The lightweight design helps reduce the physical burden associated with prolonged ECG monitoring. The device can be attached to the patient's body using an appropriate electrode configuration, allowing ECG recording during normal daily activity. The current Faros documentation also specifies an IP67-rated design, protecting against dust and temporary immersion under the conditions defined for the device.

Extended Recording Capability

The Faros 180 is designed for extended ECG data collection rather than short-duration ECG examinations. Historical technical documentation specifies up to approximately three days of recording at selected lower ECG sampling configurations, while higher sampling frequencies and additional sensor data can reduce available recording duration. The actual recording duration depends on the selected ECG sampling frequency, accelerometer settings, R-R interval recording, battery condition, and device configuration. Therefore, the monitoring duration should be configured according to the clinical requirement rather than assuming a single fixed recording period.

Bluetooth Connectivity

The Faros platform supports Bluetooth communication, allowing the device to communicate wirelessly with compatible systems. The current Faros documentation lists Bluetooth as a feature of the Faros 180. Wireless communication can support device configuration, monitoring workflows, and data transfer depending on the software and operating mode being used. The system can therefore be incorporated into digital ECG monitoring workflows without requiring the patient to remain physically connected to a conventional ECG workstation.

Digital Data Storage and File Formats

The Faros 180 records ECG and physiological data digitally. Earlier technical documentation specifies support for SDF/ASC and EDF data formats, allowing recorded information to be transferred for subsequent analysis. Digital storage is particularly useful for ambulatory monitoring because extended recordings can contain large amounts of ECG information. The recorded data can be reviewed after the monitoring period, allowing healthcare professionals to examine the patient's cardiac rhythm over the complete recording period.

ECG and Activity Correlation

Because the Faros 180 can record ECG together with accelerometer data, cardiac activity can be reviewed in relation to movement. For example, changes in heart rate may be assessed alongside periods of increased or reduced physical activity. This can provide additional context when reviewing an ambulatory recording. The combination of ECG and activity monitoring has also been used in research applications involving continuous physiological monitoring.

Applications of Faros 180 Holter Monitoring

The Faros 180 can support ambulatory ECG applications such as:

  • Extended ECG rhythm monitoring
  • Holter ECG recording
  • Heart-rate monitoring
  • R-R interval recording
  • Heart-rate-variability analysis
  • Monitoring during routine daily activity
  • Sleep-period ECG monitoring
  • Activity-linked cardiac monitoring
  • Clinical and physiological research
  • Long-duration ECG data acquisition

The specific duration, electrode configuration, and analysis method should be selected according to the patient's clinical requirements and the intended monitoring protocol.

Supporting Long-Term Cardiac Assessment

The Mega Electronics Faros 180 provides a compact approach to ambulatory ECG monitoring by combining continuous single-channel ECG recording with R-R interval measurement, heart-rate-variability capabilities, movement monitoring, and digital data storage.

Its lightweight wearable design is particularly suited to extended recordings where patient mobility is important. High-frequency ECG sampling options provide flexibility for different monitoring and analysis requirements, while Bluetooth connectivity and digital data handling support integration into modern physiological monitoring workflows.

At Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, the Faros 180 Holter system can support extended cardiac rhythm monitoring by recording ECG information beyond the short time window available with a conventional resting ECG, providing clinicians with longitudinal data for appropriate clinical evaluation.
