Triple Marker - Second Trimester

Triple Marker Test - Second Semester is a screening test that is used in pregnancy to check the risk of certain chromosomal conditions and birth defects in the unborn child. It does not require an invasive procedure. Rather, A small blood sample is used to help prepare for the possible child's need for genetic testing, and can be used to help guide the decision to consider more invasive tests, if required, and in the planning stages.

It is generally recommended by doctors for expectant mothers between 15 and 22 weeks of pregnancy. The ideal time is considered between 16 and 18 weeks. Those women who are aged 35 years or older,  have a family history of genetic disorders, abnormal ultrasound findings, or are seeking additional information about their baby's health during pregnancy, benefit greatly from this test. 

Some of the markers used here are the β-hCG hormone,  Maternal Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP)  protein, and  Unconjugated Estriol (uE3). These are produced by the foetus and the placenta. Abnormal levels of these may mean an increased risk of chromosomal conditions or developmental concerns. 

This test is an important part of the second-semester screening tests and helps assess the risk of certain conditions like  Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), Edwards syndrome (Trisomy 18), or open neural tube defects. A high risk does not mean that the child will be born with these conditions, but doctors still recommend further tests, such as ultrasounds, for a better understanding.  Early risk assessment helps to receive medical advice, and then medical tests and assistance with pregnancy management, leading to better maternal and foetal results.
