Pre-Operative Profile

Pre-Operative Profile contains all of the laboratory tests that are ordered before the surgery to determine general health and fitness for surgery. These tests can be used to look for medical issues that might pose a problem during or after the surgical procedure, and to determine what steps and treatments can be taken to minimise these risks.

It is recommended for those who are interested in minimal or frequent surgical procedures or extensive surgery. Patients with medical conditions which, if present, may affect the surgery or recovery, e.g. diabetes, kidney disease, infection, anaemia or all other chronic diseases, are very critical as their presence has to be taken into consideration.

Chemistry 7 (CBC), Blood Group & Rh Typing, Plasma Glucose, Serum Creatinine, HIV 1 & 2 Rapid Card Test, Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg) Rapid Test, Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Rapid Card Test, VDRL. The investigations give a critical assessment of the healthiness of the blood, whether the blood is suitable for blood transfusion, the level of blood sugar, kidney function, and tests for any infectious diseases that might affect the surgery.

The tests can be used to measure a level of haemoglobin, see if someone is infected with hepatitis, syphilis, HIV, Hepatitis B or other blood-borne infections, measure blood type if they need a transfusion, and measure blood glucose if necessary. Being able to recognise these co-morbidities early on the list minimises the surgical risks and helps manage the perioperative care.
