GLUCOSE (FASTING & PP)

₹100

Glucose (Fasting & PP) is one of the advanced blood test services provided at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, an NABL- and NABH-accredited diagnostic laboratory. Glucose is measured before and after meals to evaluate the body's glucose control for evaluating prediabetes, screening, diagnosis, and monitoring diabetes.

About Glucose (Fasting & PP)

The Glucose (Fasting & PP) test is a test that involves two blood tests to help determine your blood glucose levels. The Fasting Plasma Glucose test determines your blood glucose levels after fasting for a minimum of 8 hours. Usually, this will be done overnight, and you can have water. This gives information about your blood glucose levels when fasting and after eating. It is often used to monitor a diabetic patient's blood sugar levels, screen for diabetes, as part of routine medical testing, and to monitor how well a diabetic patient is controlling their blood sugar.

What is Glucose (Fasting & PP)?

Glucose is the most important source of energy in the body and is regulated by hormones such as insulin. The Glucose (Fasting & PP) test helps determine the amount of glucose in your plasma.

  • Fasting Plasma Glucose: Determines your blood glucose levels after a minimum of 8 hours of fasting. Usually this will be done overnight.
  • Postprandial Plasma Glucose: Determines your blood glucose levels after eating. Usually this will be done 2 hours after the start of your meal. Your Doctor or Laboratory will advise you on when to have this test.

This helps doctors understand how your blood sugar is being controlled and if there are any abnormalities that need investigating.

Common Reasons for Glucose (Fasting & PP)

  • Diabetes Screening: detect abnormality blood glucose/may be indicative for diabetes.
  • Prediabetes Assessment: assists in identifying blood sugar levels that are elevated, but not at a level of diabetes.
  • Diabetes Monitoring: Assesses blood glucose control for people who have been diagnosed with diabetes.
  • May be recommended for those with high blood sugar symptoms, which include increased thirst, more urination, unexplained weight loss, or fatigue.
  • Family History of Diabetes: May be recommended for those with a family history of diabetes.
  • Treatment Monitoring: Assists health care professionals to monitor BGs while on a diabetes lifestyle change and/or maintenance plan.

Conditions Evaluated

Diabetes Mellitus

The test is used to determine whether or not blood glucose level is too high after meals or when fasting, which can be a sign of diabetes. The diagnosis is based on well-established clinical criteria and repeated testing, and additional tests may be necessary.

Prediabetes

Prediabetes is a state of blood sugar that's above normal, but not high enough to be a diagnosis of diabetes. Testing may be employed to identify individuals who may require early lifestyle and medical intervention.

Impaired Fasting Glucose

Fasting glucose level that is high may mean that the person has impaired fasting glucose which in turn can put him at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Postprandial Hyperglycemia

When the BS rises after eating, it is termed postprandial hyperglycemia. Ability to use the PP test to assess the body's response to food post-meal.

Blood Glucose Control in Diabetes

When a person has diagnosed diabetes, fasting and post-meal (POCD) glucose values may provide some information to the doctor to ensure that the treatment is working and assist in changing the management if necessary.

Book Your Glucose (Fasting & PP) Test

Visit Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy for appointment scheduling to have your blood sugar tested, or if your doctor recommended that you have a blood test to check your glucose Level (Fasting & PP), learn about the best time to take the test and how the exam is performed.

Test information: Fasting for 4-5 hours.

Reporting: Within 24 hours*

  • Follow the fasting instructions provided by the diagnostic centre. The test information specifies 4–5 hours of fasting; however, the fasting glucose sample is generally collected after at least 8 hours without food. Confirm the required fasting duration with the laboratory before your appointment.
  • Plain water is generally permitted during fasting unless your doctor or laboratory advises otherwise.
  • The postprandial (PP) sample is usually collected 2 hours after the start of a meal, or at the time specified by your doctor or laboratory.
  • Eat your usual meal before the PP sample unless your doctor has advised a specific meal plan. Avoid unusual changes in your diet before testing.
  • Inform the laboratory staff about diabetes, ongoing treatment, and any medicines you take. Do not skip or change diabetes medication without your doctor's advice.
  • Follow the laboratory's instructions to ensure that both blood samples are collected at the correct times.
