Get your MRI Flexion / Extension at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, an NABL- and NABH-accredited diagnostic centre. This specialized MRI examination evaluates the spine in different positions to assess changes in alignment, stability, disc relationships, and neural structures that may not be fully visible on a routine neutral-position MRI. With advanced MRI technology and experienced radiologists, we provide detailed imaging and reliable reporting.
About MRI Flexion / Extension
MRI Flexion / Extension is a specialized dynamic MRI examination performed to evaluate spinal structures during flexion and extension positions. It may provide additional information about movement-related changes in the vertebrae, discs, spinal canal, and surrounding structures. The exact region examined depends on the clinical indication and the area specified by the referring doctor.
What is MRI Flexion / Extension?
During the examination, MRI images are obtained in different positions, typically including neutral, flexion, and extension positions as clinically appropriate. These images allow the radiologist to compare spinal alignment and structural relationships between positions. The examination uses magnetic fields and radio waves and does not involve ionizing radiation.
Common Reasons for MRI Flexion / Extension
Evaluation of suspected spinal instability
Assessment of abnormal spinal movement
Evaluation of vertebral alignment
Assessment of movement-related back or neck symptoms
Evaluation of disc and spinal canal changes
Assessment of suspected spondylolisthesis
Further evaluation when routine MRI findings are inconclusive
Postoperative assessment when dynamic evaluation is clinically required
Conditions Evaluated
Spinal Instability
Dynamic MRI can help demonstrate changes in spinal alignment or structural relationships between different positions.
Spondylolisthesis
The examination may help assess movement or changes in vertebral alignment during flexion and extension.
Disc Abnormalities
Changes in disc position or relationship with nearby neural structures may be assessed during different spinal positions.
Spinal Canal and Neural Structures
Dynamic imaging can provide additional information about changes affecting the spinal canal and neural structures during movement.
Postoperative Changes
In selected cases, dynamic imaging may be used to assess spinal stability following surgery.
Who Should Consider This Scan?
Your doctor may recommend MRI Flexion / Extension if you have:
Persistent neck or back symptoms
Suspected spinal instability
Abnormal spinal alignment
Suspected spondylolisthesis
Symptoms that change with movement or position
Findings requiring additional dynamic assessment
A history of spinal surgery requiring stability evaluation
Benefits of MRI Flexion / Extension
Dynamic assessment of spinal structures
No ionizing radiation
Comparison of spinal alignment in different positions
Additional information beyond routine neutral-position MRI
Detailed visualization of discs and neural structures
Helps support evaluation of movement-related abnormalities

Fasting is not required for this examination unless specifically advised by your doctor or the diagnostic centre.
Take your regular medicines as prescribed unless otherwise instructed.
Inform the MRI team if you have any pacemaker, implanted medical device, metal implant, aneurysm clip, cochlear implant, or other metallic object in or on your body.
Inform the team if you are pregnant or there is a possibility of pregnancy.
Wear comfortable clothing without metal components where possible.
Remove jewellery, watches, belts, hair accessories, and other metallic or magnetic objects before entering the MRI room.
Inform the radiology team about any recent spinal surgery, significant injury, or severe movement-related pain that may affect positioning.
Bring previous X-rays, MRI/CT reports, or other relevant spinal imaging if available.
Follow any additional instructions provided by the radiology team regarding positioning and movement during the examination.
The radiology team will review your symptoms, medical history, previous imaging, and the clinical reason for the examination.
MRI safety screening will be performed to identify any metallic or implanted devices that may be unsafe in the MRI environment.
You will be positioned comfortably on the MRI table according to the spinal region being examined.
Initial images may be obtained in a neutral position.
Additional images will then be acquired with the spine positioned in flexion and extension as clinically appropriate and as tolerated by the patient.
The MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images and does not use ionizing radiation.
You will be asked to remain as still as possible during each image acquisition.
The radiology team will guide you regarding the required position for each sequence and will ensure that movements are performed safely.
The radiologist will compare the images from different positions to assess changes in spinal alignment, disc relationships, spinal canal, and neural structures.
Additional image sequences or reconstructions may be obtained when clinically required.
The examination is generally non-invasive and does not require intravenous contrast unless specifically prescribed.
The final report will be prepared by the radiologist and is generally available within 24 hours.
