PRE-OPERATIVE PROFILE

₹1250

Get your Pre-Operative Profile from a leading diagnostic center for comprehensive laboratory testing services, Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, an NABL & NABH-certified diagnostic laboratory. This package comprises important blood investigations and infection screening tests which may be requested in advance of surgery to assess overall health, blood group, blood glucose, kidney function, and certain blood infections.

About Pre-Operative Profile

Pre-Operative Profile: Laboratory tests and other evaluations that are frequently ordered before a surgical procedure. These tests provide valuable information that could help the treating doctor and anaesthetist assess the patient's state of health before and after the anaesthetic, and take appropriate action. Complete Blood Count, ABO and Rh blood grouping, random plasma glucose, serum creatinine, HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and syphilis screening tests. Preoperative investigations prior to surgery and laboratory investigations for individual patients may vary depending on their age, clinical condition, medical history, and type of surgery.

What is a Pre-Operative Profile?

A Pre-Operative Profile is a set of blood tests that are done before surgery to check a number of health parameters and to detect some of the disease conditions that might require medical attention prior to surgery. Tests are used to see the levels of blood cells, blood group, glucose, kidney function, and to check for certain blood infections. These results are used to help interpret the results and, at the same time, are examined and compared with the patient's history and physical examination and other pertinent investigations of the doctor who treats them.

Tests Included in Pre-Operative Profile

Complete Blood Count (CBC)

CBC stands for complete blood count, and it counts the number of haemoglobin, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. It is helpful in evaluating anaemia, potential infection, and platelet disorders that could impact surgery.

Blood Group ABO and Rh Typing

This test looks for the ABO blood group and Rh factor in the patient. It can offer useful data when documenting patients' health records, and may assist with blood transfusion arrangements if necessary.

Plasma Glucose – Random

This test measures blood glucose at the time of sample collection, irrespective of fasting status. It provides clues as to any abnormal blood sugar levels which may need more evaluation or management prior to surgery.

Serum Creatinine

Serum creatinine is a blood test to determine kidney-related function. It assists doctors to assess renal function, which may be significant if planning anaesthetic, medications, and pre- and post-surgery treatment plans.

HIV 1 and 2 – Rapid Card

This is a screening test that will reveal antibodies for HIV-1 and HIV-2. It can be used to screen for potential HIV infection as part of the pre-operative physical examination. Diagnostic blood tests are done after a reactive test, as specified in a protocol.

Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) – Rapid Card

This is a blood test to check levels of antibodies against Hepatitis C virus. A reactive result might need further testing to see if an active HCV infection exists, like HCV RNA.

Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg) – Rapid

Hepatitis B surface antigen, Blood, helps screen for possible Hepatitis B infection and detects the Hepatitis B surface antigen. There may be confirmatory investigations to be undertaken and/or further evaluation of reactive results.

VDRL (RPR)

VDRL/RPR is a screening test for the presence of antibodies related to the disease syphilis. Reactive – due to clinical correlation and confirmation, may require additional tests.

Common Reasons for Pre-Operative Profile

  • Before Planned Surgery: Includes lab information that is selected for the pre-surgical assessment phase.
  • Blood Count Assessment: CBC is an assessment of blood cell count and abnormalities of blood cells or platelets, which helps the identification of anaemia.
  • Blood Group Identification: ABO and Rh Testing: The blood group of the patient is determined for medical records and for transfusion purposes.
  • Blood Sugar Assessment: Random glucose – used to check blood sugar levels when there are fluctuations that may need to be monitored before surgery.
  • Kidney Function Assessment: Serum creatinine gives information concerning kidney-related function.
  • Infection Screening: As part of a person's evaluation prior to surgery, they will receive testing for selected infections: HIV, HBsAg, HCV, and VDRL/RPR.
  • Surgical and Anaesthesia planning: Results can aid the treating team in looking at different factors for further assessment prior to the procedure.

Conditions and Parameters Evaluated

Anaemia and Blood Cell Abnormalities

CBC can detect problems with haemoglobin, abnormal red blood cell count, changes in the count of white blood cells, as well as platelet abnormalities which could be significant to surgery.

Blood Group and Rh Status

ABO and Rh typing involves determining the patient's blood group and is helpful information for transfusion planning if blood products are needed.

Blood Glucose Abnormalities

Random plasma glucose can detect raised blood glucose and low blood glucose levels. If there are abnormal findings, additional testing and/or medical management may be necessary prior to surgery.

Kidney-Related Abnormalities

A blood test called Crea can be used to check kidney function. This information could be relevant for anaesthetic and drug calculations and perioperative management.

HIV Screening

The HIV rapid card detects HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies. A confirmatory evaluation and medical counselling of reactive results is necessary.

Hepatitis C Infection Screening

The Hepatitis C virus rapid card detects antibodies to the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). Further tests may be requested to confirm if a virus infection is ongoing.

Syphilis Screening

Reactive results should be further evaluated clinically and, if appropriate, additional laboratory tests should be performed.
