Take your skyline views for a knee X-ray at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, a NABL & NABH-accredited diagnostic center rendering radiology and diagnostic imaging services to patients. X-ray skyline views are particular types of X-ray examinations, generally used to evaluate the patella (kneecap) and its connection to the bottom of the thigh bone (femur). Skyline views can be used to evaluate any symptoms or problems associated with the front of the knee. The patella is a small, triangular bone at the front of the knee that protects a segment of the knee joint. The patella works in conjunction with the thigh muscles to permit knee straightening. Skyline views produce a tangential image of the patellofemoral joint, enabling assessment of the patellar position, the distance between the bones, and any other apparent irregularities in the bones. This unique X-ray examination can be used to evaluate a patient with a painful knee front, difficulty walking, or other patellar issues.
X-ray skyline views are particular X-ray examinations of the patellofemoral joint. Skyline views, also referred to as patellar skyline, sunrise, or tangential views, are acquired in multiple positions depending on the indication and knee mobility. A skyline view is distinct from the usual knee X-ray (also called the knee anterior-posterior view) because it visualizes the patella and the groove in which the patella slides in the femur. Skyline views can evaluate the patellar alignment, the joint space, and some of the problems with the patellofemoral joint. The test can be performed on either one or both knees depending on the indication and the referring clinician. The number of views and positioning techniques will depend on the specific indication.
An assessment of patellar position and alignment with respect to the femoral groove can be made. Abnormal position and alignment can be associated with symptoms of pain, instability, and difficulty with knee movements. The findings must be interpreted in the context of symptoms and physical examination.
Narrowing of the joint space, bony spurs, and other findings suggestive of degenerative change in the patellofemoral joint may be seen. This information may be useful in determining whether the patient has osteoarthritis of the knee.
Visible fracture of the kneecap may be seen on X-ray skyline views. However, these projections may not always be appropriate or informative in the acute setting. In some instances, additional imaging modalities may be needed depending on the mechanism of injury and the clinical suspicion of a displaced fracture.
Some abnormalities with patellar position may be seen on a skyline view. A single X-ray projection may not be sufficient to determine the underlying cause of patellar instability. Additional tests may be necessary.
Some other visible abnormalities involving the patella and the adjacent bones may also be seen. Identification of these abnormalities will depend on image quality and patient positioning.
Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy offers radiology and diagnostic imaging services with a patient-centric approach and a focus on appropriate imaging protocols and image quality. The center also provides pathology services and has dedicated nuclear medicine facilities. Patients are assisted by trained staff throughout the imaging process, including positioning and radiation safety measures. The imaging findings should always be interpreted in the context of the referring clinician’s evaluation and management plan.
