Brain MRI for Headache: When Should You Worry?

One of the most common diseases that bothers people of all ages is headache. The majority of headaches are not severe and can be triggered by stress, lack of sleep, lack of fluid in the body, eye strain and tiredness. But a few headaches can be a sign of an underlying health problem and should be appropriately assessed. If the headache is frequent or severe, or unusual in character, doctors may want to use an MRI scan of the brain to get more information about the cause of the headache.

Lots of patients become anxious once they are advised to have a brain MRI. They tend to have questions about whether the headache is serious or if the cause of the headache is due to a brain-related condition. Most headaches are not serious, but some are so serious that they can't be overlooked. Applying cutting-edge MRI technology and the expertise and skills of its radiology team enables the physician to make a comprehensive (thorough) and confident diagnosis of brain-related symptoms.

Understanding Headaches

Headaches may show up as widely varied, though they can last longer, be more intense than others and may be triggered by different causes. Some people experience tension headaches frequently, while others suffer from migraines and/or headaches that are chronic enough to impact their daily lives.

Primary, or non-cancer, headaches (such as migraine and tension headache) are often due to abnormalities in the brain. Secondary headaches are, however, headaches that can be attributed to other factors such as infections, bleeding, tumour, inflammation, etc. and neurological problems. Doctors take care to carefully assess the symptoms of the headache, sometimes performing a neurological examination, and prescribe imaging tests like an MRI if required.

What is a Brain MRI?

The MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a state-of-the-art imaging tool used to produce types of detailed images of the brain and other structures, utilising radio waves and powerful magnets. MRI does not use radiation and provides very high-quality images of soft tissues, blood vessels, nerves, and brain tissue; most other imaging tests, such as CT scans or X-rays, do not produce as high-quality images of these tissues.

Among the tests used for neurological symptoms, MRI is one of the most useful because of its detailed imaging features, which are not present in other tests. Brain MRI can identify growths in the brain (tumours), stroke, brain infection, brain inflammation, damaged blood vessels or brain abnormalities.

When Do Doctors Recommend a Brain MRI for a Headache?

Most headaches aren't serious enough to require an MRI scan. Some of the signs and some of the symptoms, if there are red flags, if there is something that's not coming up as they're expected, then only doctors would want the patient to get. If the headache persists for weeks or months, despite treatment, it may be necessary to further investigate. Sudden, severe headaches, especially when described as the “worst headache of life”, could also warrant prompt imaging.

In most cases, there are no neurological symptoms, but headaches with any combination of dizziness, weakness, numbness, seizure, blurring of vision, difficulty speaking or balancing should be thoroughly evaluated for neurological involvement.

MRI is also suggested if a person's headaches are becoming more severe over time or headache type is changing quickly. At Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, brain MRI imaging will provide state-of-the-art imaging to support physicians in a thorough diagnosis of what might be causing neurologic headaches.

Headaches and Brain Tumours

A fear-instilling worry among patients is that the headache is related to the brain tumour. While headaches may result from a brain tumour, it's important to note that most headaches do not. If a headache is accompanied by symptoms such as weakness in one half of the body, a personality change, trouble with seeing, talking, or walking, seizures or vomiting, a doctor might order an MRI.

An important characteristic of MRI is its ability to produce detailed pictures of the tissues and structures of the brain, making it very useful in the diagnosis of brain tumours, in contrast to other medical imaging processes. The diagnosis must be obtained as early as possible due to the fact that diagnosis facilitates treatment and outcomes.

MRI for Migraine and Chronic Headache

Migraine is a very common condition of the nervous system, which can lead to a very painful headache, nausea, sensitivity to light and visual disturbances. MRI is not necessary in most people with migraine, except for those whose migraine symptoms are unusual or in the presence of a neurological abnormality.

If the patient has chronic frequent headaches and a negative impact on daily life, sometimes imaging is indicated in order to exclude secondary causes. MRI can assist the doctor in making sure that there are no structural abnormalities underlying the symptoms. In many cases, the MRI will be normal and provide some comfort to those getting it to know that they might not have a big problem with their brain.

Brain MRI for Sudden Severe Headaches

Sudden and severe headaches cannot be overlooked. Sudden onset headaches which rapidly reach full intensity in seconds to minutes can be a sign of intracranial bleeding, rupture of an aneurysm or any serious matter.

An urgent Brain MRI or additional imaging might be ordered to help the doctor determine a cause as soon as possible. Bullying prevention measures are important, particularly when symptoms like this are diagnosed early, saving lives. Moreover, an MRI might be required occasionally in individuals with trauma or head injuries who have neuro symptoms with the headache.

What Happens During a Brain MRI?

Although MRI is a safe procedure, many patients get nervous because they are not aware of what the procedure involves. A Brain MRI is an imaging test that does not traumatise the brain and is painless. The patient's body is placed on a motorised table that slides into the MRI machine during the scan. While the patient lies still, the machine takes detailed pictures of the brain.

Typically, the scan itself takes about 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the imaging requested. Sometimes, a special dye will be given to help make the blood vessels and any abnormal tissues easier to see. Comfort and safety of the patients are closely monitored during the entire MRI procedure at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy to ensure a smooth and comfortable experience.

Conclusion

Often, headaches occur, but in some cases, they are sufficiently indicative to necessitate further investigation via brain MRI. Persistent (long-term) headache; sudden, severe headaches; neurological involvement or vision changes; any seizure; or a change in headache pattern may not make it appear that way, and should not be ignored.

Brain MRI can generate detailed images which assist doctors in making precise diagnoses of tumours, abnormal blood vessels, inflammation and stroke. Although the vast majority of headaches are unrelated to serious brain disease, an MRI is also helpful to exclude serious disease and encourage the patient. Advanced imaging systems and Diagnostic expertise to analyse accurate diagnosis and provide patient-centred care, making Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy your choice for Brain MRI services.
