Book an X-Ray Both Upper Femur (hips), AP & Lateral Views at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, an NABL (National Board of Laboratories) and NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospital Management) accredited diagnostic centre that offers cutting-edge diagnostic services in Radiology & Pathology. Sophisticated, high-resolution digital X-ray imaging enables detailed side (Lateral) and front (AP) images of both the hips and the part of the femur above the hip to help identify and diagnose fractures, arthritis, hip dislocations, degenerative joint disease, and other musculoskeletal problems. Our imaging services employ our qualified radiologists who will provide you with top-quality imaging in an efficient way with a minimum radiation dose to provide you with the most accurate imaging diagnosis for your best treatment plan.
About X-Ray Both Upper Femur (Hip) AP & Lateral Views
An X-ray Both Upper Femur (hips), AP and lateral, is an X-ray of a more advanced level of the upper part (neck to the head) of the thigh bone (femur) and both hip joints. The two views provide a close-up view of the femur, and one can examine the femoral head, the femoral neck, the hip socket (acetabulum), the nearby bones, and the space in the joint. Compared to the other hips, both hips are usually looked at, so that if there is any slight variance noticed, it will be much easier to observe, and an asymmetry will be more noticeable. Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy's advanced digital imaging systems offer superb resolution, enabling doctors to accurately assess orthopedic conditions.
What is an X-Ray of Both Upper Femurs (Hip) AP & Lateral Views?
The lumbar spine can be easily and quickly visualized in two hips without needles or pain. The doctor takes an X-ray from the frontmost side (the anterior or AP view) and from the side (the lateral or side-on view) for a total of two X-rays to view the bones from different angles to investigate the alignment of bones, integrity of joints, fracture, or degenerative changes. In most cases, it is ordered to evaluate the pain, injury, limitation of motion, or suspected bone problems of the hip.
Common Reasons for an X-Ray: Both Upper Femur (Hip) AP & Lateral Views
Hip pain affecting one or both sides
Injury after a fall or road traffic accident
Suspected hip or femoral neck fracture
Difficulty walking or bearing weight
Evaluation of osteoarthritis
Hip stiffness or reduced range of motion
Follow-up after hip surgery or hip replacement
Assessment of congenital or developmental hip disorders
Conditions Evaluated
Hip Fractures
Detects fractures involving the femoral head, femoral neck, intertrochanteric region, upper femur, or acetabulum.
Hip Dislocation
Evaluates displacement or abnormal alignment of the hip joint following injury.
Osteoarthritis
Identifies joint space narrowing, bone spurs, and degenerative changes.
Avascular Necrosis (AVN)
Helps identify structural changes associated with reduced blood supply to the femoral head.
Developmental and Congenital Hip Disorders
Evaluates abnormalities affecting the shape and alignment of the hip joints.
Post-Surgical and Post-Traumatic Changes
Monitors healing following fractures, hip replacement surgery, or other orthopedic procedures.
Who Should Consider This X-Ray?
Your doctor may recommend this examination if you:
Have persistent pain in one or both hips
Have suffered trauma to the hip or upper thigh
Experience difficulty walking or standing
Have suspected fractures or hip dislocation
Need follow-up imaging after orthopedic treatment or surgery
Require evaluation before consulting an orthopedic specialist

Test information: Fasting NOT needed
Reporting: Within 04 hours*
No fasting is usually required unless specifically advised by your doctor.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing and avoid garments with metal buttons, zippers, belts, or other metallic accessories around the hip and pelvic region.
You may be asked to remove belts, keys, coins, mobile phones, jewellery, or any metallic objects from the waist and hip area before the examination.
Inform the radiographer if you are pregnant or suspect pregnancy, as X-rays involve ionising radiation.
Bring your doctor's referral along with any previous X-ray, CT, MRI, or other hip or pelvic imaging reports for comparison.
Continue taking your regular medications unless your doctor advises otherwise.
Inform the radiographer if you have recently experienced a fall, hip injury, undergone hip surgery, or have any metal implants or hip replacement.
If you have severe hip pain or difficulty standing, walking, or changing positions, let the staff know before the examination so they can assist you safely.
Arrive at the diagnostic centre 15–20 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
The patient is positioned lying on the X-ray table according to the radiographer's instructions.
Anteroposterior (AP) and lateral views of both upper femurs (hips) are obtained to evaluate the femoral heads, femoral necks, upper femurs, hip joints, acetabula (hip sockets), and surrounding bony structures.
The AP view provides a frontal image, while the lateral view offers a side profile, allowing detailed assessment of fractures, joint alignment, arthritis, hip dislocation, avascular necrosis (AVN), and other musculoskeletal abnormalities.
Imaging both hips allows the radiologist to compare the right and left sides, improving the detection of subtle asymmetry or early pathological changes.
You will be asked to remain completely still while each X-ray image is taken to ensure sharp, high-quality images.
Additional X-ray views may be obtained if required for a more comprehensive evaluation.
The examination is quick, painless, non-invasive, and does not require contrast material.
The procedure usually takes 10–15 minutes.
Reports are generally available within 04 hours*.
