About X-Ray Cervical Spine AP & Lateral View
An X-ray of the spine of the neck (cervical spine) viewed from the front and from the side (or lateral view) is a common X-ray of the neck.
AP (Anteroposterior) View: Taken from the front to evaluate the alignment of the cervical vertebrae.
Lateral View: Taken from the side to assess vertebral alignment, disc spaces, and the natural curvature of the cervical spine.
Both views offer a good examination of cervical vertebrae and any surrounding structures of both soft tissue and hard origins. Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy takes a leading role in performing cervical spine X-rays with computerised digital radiography systems, ensuring high-quality diagnostic images.
What is an X-Ray Cervical Spine AP & Lateral View?
X-ray: Cervical Spine AP & Lateral View is an easy, painless, and non-invasive imaging procedure that is performed to evaluate the bones in the neck area. It can assist the physician in detecting fractures, arthritis, cervical spine deformities, degenerative disc disease, or other disorders. It is recommended for patients who have symptoms of neurologic involvement, stiffness, neck pain, or injuries.
Common Reasons for an X-Ray Cervical Spine AP & Lateral View
Persistent neck pain or stiffness
Evaluation after neck injury or trauma
Suspected cervical spine fracture
Assessment of cervical spondylosis
Investigation of degenerative disc disease
Evaluation of abnormal spinal curvature
Follow-up after cervical spine surgery
Assessment of reduced neck mobility
Conditions Evaluated
Cervical Spine Fractures
Detects fractures involving the cervical vertebrae following trauma or accidents.
Cervical Spondylosis
Evaluates age-related degenerative changes affecting the cervical spine.
Degenerative Disc Disease
Assesses narrowing of disc spaces and other degenerative changes between the vertebrae.
Spinal Alignment Abnormalities
Identifies abnormal curvature, misalignment, or displacement of the cervical vertebrae.
Arthritis
Detects osteoarthritis and other degenerative joint conditions affecting the neck.
Post-Traumatic Changes
Evaluates injuries resulting from falls, sports injuries, or road traffic accidents.
Who Should Consider This X-Ray?
Your doctor may recommend this examination if you:
Have chronic neck pain
Experience neck stiffness or limited movement
Have suffered a neck injury
Experience numbness or tingling in the arms
Require evaluation before orthopedic or neurological treatment
Need follow-up imaging after cervical spine surgery

The patient is then repositioned to obtain a Lateral view of the cervical spine.
You may be instructed to hold your breath briefly and remain completely still while each X-ray image is captured.
The radiologist evaluates the cervical vertebrae, spinal alignment, disc spaces, and surrounding bony structures.
Additional views may be obtained if clinically required.
