Book an X-ray Coccyx Lateral View at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, which is an NABL & NABH Accredited Diagnostic Centre that provides advanced Radiology & Pathology services. Using our cutting-edge digital X-ray technology, your doctor can obtain detailed, side-view pictures of your coccyx (tailbone), with a view to diagnosing fractures, dislocations, alignment irregularities, and other conditions of the lowest end of the spine. Our expert radiologists provide top-class imaging in a safe and radiation-efficient manner, while also delivering timely reports to facilitate accurate diagnoses and treatment planning.
About X-Ray Coccyx Lateral View
X-ray Coccyx Lateral View is a type of X-ray that provides a lateral radiograph (side view) of the coccyx (also called Coccyx X-ray), which is the small, triangular-shaped bone at the lower end of the back. The lateral projection is very useful for visualizing the alignment, curvature, and relationship of the coccyx to the sacrum and gives excellent visualization for fractures and dislocations. In Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, we utilize cutting-edge digital radiography systems to produce high-resolution images that enable a precise evaluation of coccygeal injuries and disorders.
What is an X-Ray Coccyx Lateral View?
An X-Ray Coccyx Side View is a very fast, painless, non-invasive imaging test to evaluate the tailbone from a side view. It can reveal fractures, abnormal angulation, dislocations, degenerative changes, and other abnormalities that can lead to pain or discomfort. This test is frequently ordered when pain from the tailbone is not gone after an injury or after sitting too long.
Common Reasons for an X-Ray Coccyx Lateral View
Tailbone pain (coccydynia)
Fall directly onto the buttocks
Suspected coccyx fracture
Coccyx dislocation
Pain while sitting
Lower back or pelvic trauma
Follow-up after coccygeal injury or surgery
Assessment of chronic coccygeal pain
Conditions Evaluated
Coccyx Fractures
Detects fractures involving the tailbone following trauma or falls.
Coccyx Dislocation
Evaluates displacement or abnormal alignment of the coccyx.
Degenerative Changes
Assesses age-related changes affecting the coccyx and sacrococcygeal joint.
Congenital Abnormalities
Identifies developmental variations in the shape or alignment of the coccyx.
Bone Lesions
Helps detect cysts, tumors, or other abnormalities affecting the tailbone.
Post-Traumatic Changes
Monitors healing after coccygeal fractures or other injuries.
Who Should Consider This X-Ray?
Your doctor may recommend this examination if you:
Have persistent tailbone pain
Have experienced a fall onto the buttocks
Feel pain while sitting or rising from a seated position
Have suspected coccyx fracture or dislocation
Need follow-up imaging after treatment
Require evaluation before orthopedic or spine specialist consultation

Test information: Fasting NOT needed
Reporting: Within 04 hours*
No fasting is usually required unless specifically advised by your doctor.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing and avoid garments with metal buttons, zippers, belts, or other metallic accessories around the lower back and pelvic region.
You may be asked to remove belts, keys, coins, mobile phones, jewellery, or any metallic objects from the waist and pelvic area before the examination.
Inform the radiographer if you are pregnant or suspect pregnancy, as X-rays involve ionising radiation.
Bring your doctor's referral along with any previous X-ray, CT, MRI, or other spine, pelvis, or coccyx imaging reports for comparison.
Continue taking your regular medications unless your doctor advises otherwise.
Inform the radiographer if you have recently experienced a fall onto the buttocks, lower back injury, pelvic surgery, or have any implants in the pelvic or lower spine region.
If you have severe tailbone pain or difficulty sitting, standing, or changing positions, inform the staff before the examination so they can assist you safely.
Arrive at the diagnostic centre 15–20 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
The patient is positioned standing or lying on the X-ray table according to the radiographer's instructions.
A Lateral (side) View of the coccyx (tailbone) is obtained to evaluate the coccyx, sacrococcygeal joint, lower sacrum, and surrounding bony structures.
The lateral projection provides a clear side profile of the coccyx, allowing assessment of fractures, dislocations, abnormal angulation, alignment abnormalities, degenerative changes, and other disorders affecting the tailbone.
You may be asked to slightly adjust your body position to obtain the best possible image of the coccyx.
You will be instructed to remain completely still while the X-ray image is taken to ensure sharp, high-quality images.
Additional X-ray views may be obtained if required for a more comprehensive evaluation.
The examination is quick, painless, non-invasive, and does not require contrast material.
The procedure usually takes 10–15 minutes.
Reports are generally available within 04 hours*.
