About X-Ray Left Shoulder Joint Axial View
An X-ray Left Shoulder Joint Axial View is a special type of X-ray that can be taken to see an axial (cross-sectional) view of the left shoulder joint. This view offers a thorough examination of the humeral head, glenoid cavity, scapula, acromion, and its surrounding bones. It has extra value when assessing how well the shoulder joint fits together and is useful for detecting subtle abnormalities that cannot be identified on conventional AP views of the hip. Digital radiography and digital imaging systems at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy are high-resolution to accurately evaluate shoulder injuries and musculoskeletal disorders.
What is an X-Ray Left Shoulder Joint Axial View?
X-ray Left Shoulder Joint Axial View is a type of imaging test of the left shoulder joint from an axial (side-on) view that takes a short time and doesn't involve any X-ray penetrating the skin, which is why it is not invasive or painful. This special view assists physicians in looking at the alignment of the joint, diagnosing a fracture, verifying that the shoulder has not been dislocated forward, verifying that the shoulder has not been dislocated backward, and even helping determine if there are degenerative or traumatic issues with the shoulder. A shoulder examination is often suggested for any patient with pain or limitation of motion following shoulder trauma and/or instability.
Common Reasons for an X-Ray Left Shoulder Joint Axial View
Left shoulder injury following a fall or accident
Persistent shoulder pain
Suspected shoulder dislocation
Suspected fracture of the shoulder joint
Shoulder instability
Limited range of shoulder movement
Evaluation of arthritis
Follow-up after shoulder surgery or fracture treatment
Conditions Evaluated
Shoulder Dislocation
Detects anterior or posterior dislocation of the shoulder joint and evaluates joint alignment.
Shoulder Fractures
Identifies fractures involving the proximal humerus, glenoid cavity, scapula, or adjacent structures.
Osteoarthritis
Assesses joint space narrowing, bone spurs, and degenerative changes affecting the shoulder.
Bone Lesions
Helps identify bone cysts, tumors, or other abnormalities affecting the shoulder bones.
Congenital Shoulder Abnormalities
Evaluates developmental abnormalities involving the shoulder joint.
Post-Traumatic and Post-Surgical Changes
Monitors healing following fractures, joint injuries, shoulder stabilization procedures, or other orthopedic surgeries.
Who Should Consider This X-Ray?
Your doctor may recommend this examination if you:
Have persistent pain in the left shoulder
Have suffered trauma to the shoulder
Experience shoulder instability or restricted movement
Have suspected shoulder dislocation or fracture
Need follow-up imaging after treatment or surgery
Require evaluation before an orthopedic consultation

You may be asked to remove jewellery, necklaces, shoulder straps with metal components, or any metallic objects from the upper body before the examination.
Inform the radiographer if you are pregnant or suspect you may be pregnant, as X-rays involve ionising radiation.
Bring your doctor's referral along with any previous X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, or orthopedic imaging reports of the shoulder for comparison.
Continue taking your regular medications unless your doctor advises otherwise.
Inform the radiographer if you have recently sustained a shoulder injury, undergone surgery, or have metal implants, plates, screws, or a shoulder prosthesis.
If you have severe shoulder pain or difficulty moving or positioning your arm, inform the staff before the examination so they can assist you safely.
Arrive at the diagnostic centre 15–20 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
The patient is positioned either sitting, standing, or lying on the X-ray table according to the radiographer's instructions.
A dedicated Axial View of the left shoulder joint is obtained to evaluate the humeral head, glenoid cavity, acromion, coracoid process, scapula, and the alignment of the shoulder joint.
The axial projection provides excellent visualization of the relationship between the humeral head and the glenoid, helping assess shoulder dislocations, fractures, joint instability, arthritis, bone lesions, congenital abnormalities, and other musculoskeletal conditions.
You may be asked to position or slightly raise your arm, depending on your comfort level and the clinical indication, to obtain the best possible image.
It is important to remain completely still while the X-ray image is taken to ensure a sharp, high-quality image.
Additional X-ray views may be obtained if required for a more comprehensive assessment.
The examination is quick, painless, non-invasive, and does not require contrast material.
The procedure usually takes 5–10 minutes.
Reports are generally available within 04 hours*.
