An X-ray Right Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Oblique View is a special diagnostic type of X-ray that examines the right sacroiliac (SI) joint, the base of the spine, and the right iliac (pelvis) bone. It provides good visualization of the space of the SI joints and is useful for the diagnosis of inflammation, arthritis, fractures, other abnormalities at the base of the SI joints, infections, and other abnormalities not apparent on routine pelvic radiographs.

The sacroiliac joints play a very important role in transmitting weight from top to bottom; they are also a shock absorber and stabilizer while someone is on the move. Some conditions that can involve the SI joint include pain down the lower back, buttock, hip, or groin. Radiographs of the pelvis are not the best for visualizing the joint, and an oblique X-ray view is good because it provides better visualization of the joint. This test is used frequently when people present with long-standing back pain, a possible diagnosis of sacroiliitis, a history of trauma, or inflammatory joint diseases.

An X-ray SOV is an X-ray of the body where the patient is tilted to obtain a good view of the right sacroiliac joint. Oblique projection helps examine the joint space, adjacent bones, and the alignment of the structures more accurately.

  • Remove jewellery, belts, wallets, keys, mobile phones, or any metallic objects before the examination.
  • Carry previous X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, or orthopedic/rheumatology reports, if available.
  • Inform the radiologist if you have a history of chronic lower back pain, sacroiliitis, arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, pelvic injury, spinal surgery, or inflammatory joint disease.
  • Women should inform the radiographer if they are pregnant or think they may be pregnant.
