About X-Ray Right Upper Femur - Hip AP & Lateral Views
X-ray Right Upper Femur - Hip AP & Lateral Views is an imaging procedure to give very detailed images of the upper part of the right femur (thigh bone) and the hip joint from two different angles. The lateral view gives a side view that allows better visibility of the following: the femoral head; the femoral neck; the greater trochanter; the lesser trochanter; the upper femur; the acetabulum, and any other nearby bone. Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy features sophisticated digital radiography equipment for generating detailed images of the hip and upper femurs, enabling them to evaluate hip and upper femur injuries with precision.
What is an X-Ray Right Upper Femur - Hip AP & Lateral Views?
An X-ray Right Upper Femur (Hip AP and Lateral Views) is a diagnostic X-ray procedure that helps assess the bone and joint abnormalities of the upper femur (thigh) and hip area of the right leg, and is fast & painless to perform. The combination of the AP and lateral allows doctors to be able to determine the bone alignment, fracture, joint dislocation, and other degenerative or structural abnormalities of the hip and femur. Patients who have symptoms of pain in the hip joint and upper thigh and who have been injured, have trouble walking, or have a decrease in movement may benefit from this examination.
Common Reasons for an X-Ray Right Upper Femur - Hip AP & Lateral Views
Injury to the right hip or upper thigh after a fall or accident
Persistent hip or thigh pain
Suspected femur fracture
Suspected hip fracture
Difficulty walking or bearing weight
Hip joint dislocation
Evaluation of arthritis
Follow-up after fracture treatment or orthopedic surgery
Conditions Evaluated
Upper Femur Fractures
Detects fractures involving the femoral head, femoral neck, trochanteric region, and upper femur.
Hip Joint Dislocation
Evaluates abnormal alignment or displacement of the femoral head from the hip socket.
Osteoarthritis
Assesses joint space narrowing, bone spurs, and degenerative changes affecting the hip joint.
Avascular Necrosis (AVN)
Helps identify structural changes in the femoral head caused by reduced blood supply.
Bone Lesions
Helps detect cysts, tumors, infections, or other abnormalities affecting the upper femur.
Post-Traumatic and Post-Surgical Changes
Monitors healing following fractures, hip replacement, or other orthopedic procedures.
Who Should Consider This X-Ray?
Your doctor may recommend this examination if you:
Have persistent pain in the right hip or upper thigh
Have suffered trauma or injury
Experience difficulty walking or standing
Have suspected fractures or joint abnormalities
Need follow-up imaging after treatment or surgery
Require evaluation before an orthopedic consultation

Test information: Fasting NOT needed
Reporting: Within 04 hours*
No fasting or special preparation is required for this X-ray examination.
Wear comfortable clothing and avoid clothing with metal zippers, buttons, belts, or other metallic objects around the hip and upper thigh region.
You may be asked to change into a hospital gown to ensure clear imaging of the right hip and upper femur.
Inform the radiographer if you are pregnant or suspect you may be pregnant, as X-rays involve ionising radiation.
Bring your doctor's referral along with any previous X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, or orthopaedic imaging reports related to your hip or femur for comparison.
Continue taking your regular medications unless your doctor advises otherwise.
Inform the radiographer if you have recently sustained a hip injury, undergone hip or femur surgery, or have metal implants, screws, plates, or a hip replacement.
If you have severe pain or difficulty standing or moving your leg, inform the staff before the examination so they can position you comfortably.
Arrive at the diagnostic centre 15–20 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
The patient is positioned lying on the X-ray table according to the radiographer's instructions.
Anteroposterior (AP) and Lateral Views of the right upper femur and hip joint are obtained to evaluate the femoral head, femoral neck, greater and lesser trochanters, acetabulum (hip socket), proximal femur, hip joint space, and surrounding bony structures.
These complementary views help assess fractures, hip dislocations, osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis (AVN), bone lesions, post-traumatic changes, and other abnormalities affecting the right hip and upper femur.
Proper positioning of the leg and hip is maintained to obtain clear visualisation of the bones and joints with minimal overlap.
You will be asked to remain completely still while each X-ray image is taken to ensure sharp, high-quality images.
Additional X-ray views may be obtained if required for a more comprehensive assessment.
The examination is quick, painless, non-invasive, and does not require contrast material.
The procedure usually takes 10–15 minutes.
Reports are generally available within 04 hours*.
