At Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, an NABL & NABH-accredited diagnostic centre that provides advanced diagnostic imaging, you can obtain your DEXA scan for the right forearm. A DEXA scan of the right forearm measures bone mineral density and can contribute to the assessment of osteoporosis and fragility fracture risk. This test is used to help assess bone density in a specific area of the right forearm, and may be helpful when examining the hip or spine, or when more information is needed regarding bone health. Our centre uses modern bone densitometry technology and the implementation of the correct testing protocols to attain accurate results for use in clinical assessment and management of bone health.
DEXA Forearm-Right is a special type of bone density test that consists of inspections of a particular subset of bones within the right forearm. Forearm DEXA may assist in osteoporosis assessment when clinically indicated. Forearm DEXA might be ordered if hip or spine measurements are not reliable or if some clinical factors limit measurements at these sites, or if the doctor treating the patient specifically requests a measurement made at the forearm. Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy has bone densitometry protocols in place in order to provide correct evaluation of bone health.
DEXA Forearm-Right employs two X-ray energy levels and low doses of radiation to estimate bone mineral density in a small area of the right forearm. However, the results are matched up against, or compared with, reference values to determine if bone density is in the expected range or decreased. There are no injections for the test, and it is rapid, non-invasive, and simple. The results are then analyzed by a doctor with the patient's medical history, fracture history, and the patient's medications, as well as other risk factors.
DEXA is used to determine if your bone mineral density is decreased, and this may lead to a higher risk of fractures. In some patients, more detailed assessment of the femur or spine may not be suitable and/or may not be available, and forearm measurement may be useful.
Osteopenia is a state of bone mineral density below the normal/expected range, but not at the bone density threshold of osteoporosis. All the results obtained should be interpreted in light of the patient's clinical history, age, and other risk factors.
The examination can also be a useful aid for evaluating bone health in metabolic diseases associated with changes in bone mineralization and/or calcium balance. Further laboratory tests and assessment might be required to determine the cause.
The use of DEXA may aid in monitoring bone mineral density change over time and response to treatment, when forearm measurements are appropriate.
