The NABL & NABH-accredited Diagnostic Centre under Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy provides the facility for getting a Neuro Sonogram done in the advanced Radiology and diagnostic imaging Centre. Uses high frequency sound waves to produce an image that helps doctors to see what is happening inside the brain, or to know if they should look further for any brain abnormality.
Neuro Sonogram, also named cranial ultrasound or neurosonography, is a non-invasive imaging exam that is frequently performed in newborns and young babies. The ultrasound probe is placed over an open fontanelle, which provides an acoustic window for imaging the brain without radiating any ionizing rays. Premature babies that are at risk for neurological issues at birth, infants with suspected intracranial abnormalities or abnormal head growth, and babies that require brain development study may be suggested for examination in the first few weeks of life. The exact examination and exam range will depend on the patient's clinical condition, doctor's prescription, and the patient's age.
Neuro Sonogram: an image or images of the brain and selected brain spaces are created using high-frequency sound waves. The neonate and young infant with an open fontanelle provides an acoustical window for providing ultrasound images. The exam may be helpful in determining how large the ventricles are (the fluid-filled centers of the brain), which areas of the brain are enlarged, and some abnormalities such as bleeding in the brain and changes resulting from fluid buildup within the brain. Does not include the use of ionizing radiation and is relatively innocuous. The usefulness of the examination will vary with the age and what can be observed. Cranial ultrasound is inappropriate for older children/ adults because the ultrasound waves get blocked by the skull.
This test is used to assess the size of brain ventricles. There may be a need for additional work-up to identify the cause and effective management in the case of enlarged ventricles.
The neurosonography might assist in determining specific abnormalities in the brain tissue around a ventricle, especially in prematurely born infants.
Some brain abnormalities can be seen during the examination, after the part for the ultrasound. Additional imaging might be required for in-depth assessment.
With ultrasound, the size of the ventricles and some fluid-related alterations in the brain can be estimated. Results are presented along with the clinical information and other investigations.
In cases where a previous abnormality is detected in the scan, for instance, a change in the size of the ventricles or some other abnormality spotted in the brain, neurosonography may be requested to monitor what changes occur.
May add useful information about other abnormalities which were selected to be examined if examination technique is adapted and patient is young enough. Some brain conditions do not show up with ultrasound.
Molecular Diagnostic and Therapy is an NABL & NABH accredited diagnostic centre offering both radiology, nuclear medicine and pathology services. Our emphasis in diagnostic imaging services is to implement the correct protocols for quality imaging, patient comfort, and reporting.
For patients that have been suggested to have an examination with use of a Neuro Sonogram, please call Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy to determine the best examination protocol and dates. Bring the prescription as well as reports of previous imaging and medical records, if available.
