This is a test that looks at the bones of the left arm with X-rays and can help the doctor find out if there is a fracture, position of the bones, injuries, and other abnormalities of the arm bones.

About X-Ray Left Arm AP Views

X-Ray Left Arm AP Views is an X-ray of the left arm from the back (anteroposterior or AP) of the body, viewing the bones of the arm. It may be used to help show the alignment, continuity, and bone structure, and to diagnose abnormality or injury. May be recommended following a crash or fall or when someone has left arm pain, swelling, tenderness, or can't move their left arm.

What is X-Ray Left Arm AP Views?

X-ray is a kind of small radiation of the type called ionizing radiation used to make images from internal structures. In an AP view, the X-ray beam goes from the front (anterior) of the arm to the back (posterior) of the arm. Bones being examined in general are upper arm and the upper arm bones are humerus. The actual area covered will depend on the doctor's medical need and the location in which the positioning has occurred during imaging. An X-ray is taken to assess the bone structure, alignment, and any abnormalities that can be detected.

Common Reasons for X-Ray Left Arm AP Views

  • Suspected Fracture – Assessment: After a fracture that has been suspected, due to accident, fall or direct impact, with the left arm bone.
  • Left Arm Pain: Assessment of left arm pain for those who have experienced it over the past 12 months and who have not received an explanation for what caused it.
  • If there is an injury of the bone or bone condition suspected, evaluation of the bone for swelling.
  • Normal arm movement may be compromised due to pain/injury; restricted movement = investigation.
  • Deformity: Assessment of the deformation of the bones.
  • Post-treatment imaging: X-rays may be advised to check healing of fracture or positioning of bones after treatment.

Conditions Evaluated

Bone Fractures

The X-ray may help with diagnosing fractures, displacement, and distribution of the fracture. Evaluates injuries to the humerus.

Bone Alignment Abnormalities

The doctor's view in the AP provides a view of the alignment and location of the arm bone, and allows them to determine if there are visible abnormalities in the structure.

Joint-Related Abnormalities

If the relevant shoulder or elbow joint is included in the imaging field, some associated bony abnormalities may be visible. However, a dedicated shoulder or elbow X-ray may be required for detailed joint assessment.

Bone Lesions and Structural Changes

X-rays may show some bone changes, growths, or loss of bone density or structure that need more clinical investigation.

Fracture Healing

Retakes of X-rays can be useful to determine the healing stage after breaking a bone or surgery for a fracture.
