Get your X-ray rib AP View at the Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, NABL & NABH Accredited Diagnostic Centre providing advanced Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging Services. This study will be performed as an anteroposterior (AP) radiograph of the ribs, which helps to diagnose rib fractures and rib bone injuries as well as other rib cage abnormalities.
About X-Ray Rib AP View
X-ray Rib AP View is a diagnostic imaging test to help evaluate the front-to-back view of the ribs. Helps to see the rib bones and aids in the identification of fractures or deformities, etc., in light of changes in structure. It may be ordered after a person sustains chest trauma or falls, or after an accident, or when a patient experiences localized rib pain, tenderness, or discomfort on breathing and/or motion.
What is X-Ray Rib AP View?
An AP X-ray is an anterior-to-posterior (front to back) view of the body that can be used to see the rib cage. The examination helps assess the ribs for fractures, alignment abnormalities, and visible changes in bone structure. The doctor might want to order more X-rays of the ribs or chest for a full analysis based on the symptoms and clinical need.
Common Reasons for X-Ray Rib AP View
Thoracic Status: To check the condition or tenderness of the ribs.
Symptoms of discomfort related to breathing: If rib pain gets worse when breathing, coughing, or moving.
Trauma of chest: Evaluation post chest trauma.
Bone Abnormalities: An examination of any visible deformities or other changes in structures of the ribs.
Follow-up Imaging: X-rays of particular ribs after therapy.
Conditions Evaluated
Rib Fractures
If fractures are suspected, a series of X-rays may be ordered, checking the extent and visibility of the fractures, and in order to see if they can be seen in the ribs. The fractures might be nondisplaced or subtle and not seen on the first X-ray.
Rib Deformities
The exam can surface any structural modification or abnormality that might be noted, like irregular rib shape, alignment anomalies, or changes.
Chest Wall Injuries
Rib imaging is used to effectively evaluate bone trauma following a traumatic incident and/or impact to the chest wall.
Bone Lesions
Some rib structural abnormalities, such as some bone defects, may be seen on X-ray and might need further investigation.
Associated Chest Complications
If performed, a chest X-ray may help to assess complications of the rib trauma such as pneumothorax and pleural changes. An AP view of the ribs may not be all that is needed for these.

Reporting: Within 24 hours*
Fasting is not required for this examination.
Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the chest and rib area.
Remove jewellery, chains, or other metallic objects around the chest before the examination.
Inform the radiology staff if you have any possibility of pregnancy.
Carry the doctor's prescription, previous X-ray images, relevant imaging reports, and medical records, if available.
Inform the radiology staff about any recent chest injury, surgery, localized rib pain, or difficulty breathing.
If you experience pain while moving or taking a deep breath, inform the radiographer before positioning.
Follow the radiographer's instructions regarding positioning and breathing during image acquisition.
The patient is positioned for the anteroposterior (AP) view of the rib cage according to the prescribed examination.
The radiographer adjusts the patient's position to ensure that the required rib region is included in the X-ray field.
The X-ray equipment and detector are aligned to obtain the appropriate front-to-back view of the ribs.
The patient may be asked to take a deep breath or hold their breath briefly, depending on the imaging requirements.
The patient is asked to remain still while the X-ray image is captured to avoid blurring.
A controlled amount of X-ray radiation passes through the chest to produce an image of the rib bones and surrounding structures.
The radiographer checks the image quality and may take additional views if required.
The radiologist reviews the images to assess rib fractures, alignment, deformities, and other visible bone abnormalities.
