About Holter Monitor Test
Holter Monitoring Test is an electrocardiogram (ECG), done using a special apparatus that records the electrical activity of the heart over a period of 24-48 hours or longer as advised by your physician. A small portable instrument connected to the electrodes fixed to the chest will record the heart's electrical activity continuously.
At Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, the sophisticated technology applied in the Holter Monitoring gives extensive information about your heart’s rhythm that may contain abnormal rhythms only sometimes occurring and not found during a normal ECG.
What is a Holter Monitor Test?
Holter Monitor Test is an ambulatory electrocardiography (ECG) test, which is used to measure the electrical activity from your heart. The Holter monitor functions both day and night, recording heart activity, whereas a regular ECG test only records the activity for a few seconds. This test is usually prescribed to those who experience intermittent symptoms such as palpitations, lightheadedness, syncope, chest pain, or arrhythmias.
Common Reasons for a Holter Monitor Test
Palpitations or irregular heartbeat
Unexplained dizziness or lightheadedness
Fainting (syncope) or near-fainting episodes
Suspected cardiac arrhythmias
Chest discomfort
Monitoring after a heart attack
Evaluation of pacemaker function
Assessing the effectiveness of heart medications
Investigation of unexplained fatigue related to heart rhythm
Conditions Evaluated
Cardiac Arrhythmias
Detects irregular heart rhythms such as atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, bradycardia, tachycardia, and premature heartbeats.
Palpitations
Helps determine whether episodes of rapid or irregular heartbeat are caused by underlying rhythm abnormalities.
Syncope (Fainting)
Evaluates whether fainting or dizziness is related to intermittent heart rhythm disturbances.
Bradycardia and Tachycardia
Identifies abnormally slow or fast heart rates occurring during daily activities or sleep.
Pacemaker Evaluation
Assesses the functioning of implanted pacemakers and monitors heart rhythm after device implantation.
Treatment Monitoring
Helps evaluate the effectiveness of medications or other treatments used to control abnormal heart rhythms.
Who Should Consider This Test?
Your doctor may recommend a Holter Monitor Test if you:
Experience frequent palpitations
Have unexplained dizziness or fainting
Feel episodes of rapid or irregular heartbeat
Need evaluation of suspected arrhythmias
Require monitoring after heart treatment or surgery
Have an implanted pacemaker
Need assessment of medication effectiveness

Holter Monitor Test
The patient's chest is cleaned, and small adhesive electrodes are attached to specific areas of the chest.
The electrodes are connected to a portable Holter monitor, which continuously records the heart's electrical activity for 24–48 hours or longer, as prescribed by the doctor.
The patient is encouraged to continue normal daily activities during the monitoring period to capture heart rhythm changes that may occur during routine life.
The patient may be asked to maintain a diary of symptoms such as palpitations, dizziness, chest pain, shortness of breath, physical activities, and sleep, noting the time each event occurs.
The monitor continuously records the heart's electrical signals while the patient carries out normal activities, including walking, working, resting, and sleeping.
After the prescribed monitoring period, the patient returns to the diagnostic centre, where the monitor and electrodes are removed.
The recorded data is downloaded and analyzed by the cardiologist to evaluate cardiac arrhythmias, atrial fibrillation, bradycardia, tachycardia, premature heartbeats, palpitations, syncope, pacemaker function, treatment response, and other heart rhythm abnormalities.
After detailed analysis, the final report is generally available within 24 hours after completion of monitoring.
