Get your Paediatric ECHO done at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, a NABL and NABH accredited diagnostic centre. Paediatric ECHO, also known as paediatric echocardiography, is a non-invasive and painless procedure that utilizes the power of ultrasound to create images of the heart. The test enables the physician to examine the heart structure, including the chambers, valves, and circulation. It is primarily used to identify congenital heart defects present in newborns, infants, children, and adolescents.
What is Paediatric ECHO?
Paediatric ECHO is a type of ultrasound imaging done on children to have a clear view of their heart. The technique generates moving images of the heart, which allows the physician to examine the heart chambers, valves, and blood circulation. The test is completely safe as it does not expose the child to radiation, is painless, and does not require a child to receive any injection as well. It may be recommended for newborns, infants, and older children depending upon their symptoms.
Common Reasons for Paediatric ECHO
Evaluation of a heart murmur
Assessment of suspected congenital heart defects
Investigation of breathing difficulties or unexplained fatigue
Evaluation of bluish discolouration of the lips or skin
Assessment of poor growth when a heart condition is suspected
Investigation of chest discomfort or fainting when clinically indicated
Evaluation of abnormal findings during a physical examination
Monitoring of a previously diagnosed heart condition
Follow-up after certain cardiac procedures or treatments
Conditions Evaluated
Congenital Heart Defects
Paediatric ECHO is primarily indicated to detect and evaluate congenital heart defects, including the hole in the heart and some of the heart valve and vessel abnormalities.
Heart Valve Abnormalities
The test is useful in detecting any heart valve abnormalities. It empowers the physician to closely examine the valves and determine if they are opening and closing appropriately or not.
Heart Function
The test can be utilized to assess heart function. It enables the physician to determine how well the heart is pumping and how well the valves are functioning.
Blood Flow Abnormalities
Abnormal blood flow in the heart can be detected with the help of Doppler imaging. The technique utilizes the power of ultrasound to examine the speed and direction of blood flow in the heart. With its help, the physician can determine if there is high pressure in the lungs and heart.
Fluid Around the Heart
With this procedure, the physician can detect the fluid around the heart. It helps in determining if there is an abnormal accumulation of fluid around the heart.
Who Should Consider This Scan?
Your child's doctor may recommend a Paediatric ECHO if your child has:
A heart murmur detected during an examination
Suspected congenital heart disease
Breathing difficulties or unusual tiredness
Bluish lips or skin
Poor growth with suspected cardiac involvement
Abnormal findings on other cardiac tests
A known heart condition requiring regular monitoring
A family or medical history that requires further cardiac assessment

The child is asked to lie on an examination bed.
A small amount of ultrasound gel is applied to the chest.
The sonographer or doctor moves a probe over the chest to obtain images of the heart.
The images help assess the heart chambers, valves, blood flow, and possible structural abnormalities.
The procedure is painless and usually takes around 20–40 minutes, depending on the child and the type of examination.
The child can usually resume normal activities after the test.
