About Echocardiography (Echo) Test
An Echocardiography (Echo) Test is an imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the heart without performing the test invasively. It helps doctors see how the heart chambers and heart valves function, and how the heart's muscle and blood flow. The advanced systems of echocardiography allow imaging with high resolution at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, and contribute to the correct diagnosis of various heart diseases.
What is an Echocardiography Test?
An Echocardiogram (Echo) is a test using sound waves to examine the heart and how it works. To produce the pictures, a special instrument called a transducer is set against the chest, directing sound waves into the heart and "listening" for echoes to return to the transducer and display the reflections as movement. The test is helpful to determine heart size, pumping ability, valve function and blood flow, and defects in the heart muscle or other nearby tissues.
Common Reasons for an Echocardiography Test
Chest pain evaluation
Shortness of breath assessment
Heart murmur evaluation
Irregular heartbeat assessment
High blood pressure-related heart evaluation
Monitoring known heart disease
Assessment after heart attack
Evaluation before or after cardiac procedures
Follow-up of heart valve disorders
Conditions Evaluated
Heart Valve Disorders
Assesses narrowing, leakage, or abnormal movement of heart valves.
Heart Failure
Evaluates the heart's pumping ability and measures parameters such as ejection fraction.
Cardiomyopathy
Helps diagnose diseases affecting the heart muscle and its ability to function properly.
Congenital Heart Disease
Detects structural abnormalities of the heart present from birth.
Pericardial Diseases
Evaluates fluid accumulation or abnormalities involving the sac surrounding the heart.
Blood Flow Abnormalities
Assesses movement of blood through heart chambers and valves using Doppler techniques.
Who Should Consider This Test?
Your doctor may recommend an Echocardiography Test if you:
Experience chest pain or breathing difficulty
Have abnormal ECG findings
Have a heart murmur
Have high blood pressure
Have symptoms of heart failure
Have a history of heart disease
Need evaluation of heart valves
Require monitoring after cardiac treatment

Test information: Fasting NOT needed.
Reporting: Within 24 hours*
No fasting or special preparation is required for the Echocardiography (Echo) Test.
Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the chest area for placement of the ultrasound transducer.
Avoid applying oils, lotions, creams, or powders on the chest area on the day of the examination, as they may affect proper scanning.
Inform your doctor about any previous heart conditions, chest pain, shortness of breath, heart valve problems, high blood pressure, or other cardiac concerns.
Inform your doctor about all current medications you are taking, especially heart-related medicines.
Carry previous ECG reports, Echocardiography reports, Holter Monitor reports, TMT reports, angiography reports, cardiac prescriptions, or other relevant medical records, if available, for comparison and accurate assessment.
Inform the technician or cardiologist if you have any difficulty lying in certain positions due to pain, breathing problems, or other medical conditions.
Follow all instructions provided by the cardiac technician during the examination.
Arrive 10–15 minutes before your scheduled appointment for registration and preparation.
Echocardiography (Echo) Test
The patient is positioned comfortably on the examination table, usually lying slightly on the left side to obtain better images of the heart.
A small amount of ultrasound gel is applied to the chest area to allow smooth transmission of sound waves.
The cardiac technician places a handheld device called a transducer on different areas of the chest to capture detailed images of the heart.
High-frequency ultrasound waves are transmitted into the heart, and the returning echoes are converted into real-time images on the monitor.
The examination evaluates the size of heart chambers, thickness and movement of heart muscles, functioning of heart valves, blood flow patterns, and pumping ability of the heart.
Doppler techniques may be used to assess the direction and speed of blood flow through the heart chambers and valves.
The patient may be asked to change position or briefly hold their breath during certain parts of the examination to obtain clearer images.
The procedure is safe, painless, non-invasive, and does not involve radiation exposure.
The cardiologist analyzes the recorded images to evaluate heart valve disorders, heart failure, cardiomyopathy, congenital heart disease, pericardial abnormalities, blood flow abnormalities, and overall cardiac function.
After detailed evaluation, the final report is generally available within 24 hours.
