IODINE-131 THERAPY – 200 mCi FOR THYROID CANCER

₹200000

Visit Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, a diagnostic centre which is NABL & NABH Accredited in treating thyroid-related cancer with Iodine - 131 (I-131) Therapy. This is a high dose of radioiodine that will target the thyroid tissue and iodine-avid thyroid cancer cells. With some patients with differentiated thyroid cancer, a treatment dose of 200 m Ci can be indicated based on the individual clinical judgment and treatment plan of the Nuclear Medicine specialist.

About Iodine-131 Therapy – 200 mCi

Iodine-131 therapy is a specialized/unique nuclear medicine treatment that is relatively utilized in an individual with differentiated thyroid cancer, most commonly papillary and follicular thyroid cancer. Iodine is needed by the thyroid cells to make thyroid hormones. Radioactive iodine (I-131) takes advantage of this property by directing specifically targeted radiation to the cancer cells and the thyroid tissue that have that ability. Therapeutic activity of 200mci can be considered for selected cases based on previous course of therapy, risk categorization, and previous therapy response. Treatment each person receives is individualized to that person by their treatment provider.

What is Iodine-131 Therapy?

Iodine-131 is a radioactive isotope of iodine which releases beta and gamma radiation. Once inside the body, it is taken up by cells within the thyroid that avidly take up iodine. The beta radiation kills the intended thyroid tissue and the cancers, while the gamma radiation provides radioactive products for imaging and monitoring. This will typically be administered orally in the form of a capsule or liquid, dosed and supervised in an appropriate healthcare facility. Iodine-131 therapy may be administered following thyroid surgery to kill any non-removed thyroid tissue, for some remaining thyroid tissue, and/or to control iodine-avid metastatic disease in thyroid cancer.

Common Reasons for Iodine-131 Therapy – 200 mCi

  • Differentiated Thyroid Cancer: To treat some papillary and follicular thyroid cancers which are iodine-receptive.
  • Post-Surgical Ablation: If there is any tissue left in the thyroid gland after the thyroidectomy, then it will be treated as necessary.
  • For metastatic (cancer that has spread beyond the thyroid) thyroid cancer, treated with iodine that has been targeted for specific deposits in the body.
  • Recurrent Thyroid Cancer: Evaluate and treat the appropriate recurrent thyroid cancer patients with iodine.
  • High-risk thyroid cancer: To provide increased therapy to a selected cohort of patients, depending on tumour type and clinical risk.

Conditions Evaluated and Treated

Follicular Thyroid Carcinoma

Follicular thyroid carcinoma cells may retain iodine uptake after thyroidectomy. The ability to take up iodine depends on tumour biology and differentiation, not on preserving iodine uptake during surgery.

Residual Thyroid Tissue

There may be any amount of normal thyroid tissue remaining if you've undergone surgery for your thyroid. Radioiodine treatment may kill this tissue and aid the management and subsequent monitoring of the disease.

Iodine-Avid Metastatic Disease

Differentiated thyroid cancer can spread to regional lymph nodes and distant organs, particularly the lungs and bones. I-131 treatment can be used to help focus on areas if there is uptake of iodine in the cancer deposits.

Persistent or Recurrent Differentiated Thyroid Cancer

If investigations have shown persistent or recurrent iodine-avid disease and the patient is likely to benefit from further treatment, then radioiodine therapy may be considered.

Book Your Iodine-131 Therapy – 200 mCi.

If your doctor has suggested having Iodine-131 Therapy with 200mCi for thyroid cancer, please call Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy to schedule a consultation and therapy. Present the histopathology report, records from thyroid surgery if applicable, previous thyroid radioiodine treatment details, thyroglobulin reports, thyroid function tests, images, and prescription of the treating physician for thyroid treatment. Treatment will be deemed appropriate following specialist assessment and established suitability, and then scheduled thereafter.

Test information: Fasting NOT needed

Reporting: Within 24 hours*

  • Fasting is not required unless specifically advised by the Nuclear Medicine specialist.
  • Bring your treating doctor's prescription, histopathology report, thyroid surgery records, and details of any previous Iodine-131 treatment.
  • Carry recent thyroglobulin reports, thyroid function test results, and relevant imaging reports or scans.
  • Inform the specialist about your current medicines, supplements, allergies, and any previous medical conditions.
  • Follow the specialist's instructions regarding thyroid hormone medication and any preparation required before treatment. Do not stop or change medicines on your own.
  • Inform the specialist if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Iodine-131 therapy is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Follow the centre's instructions regarding a low-iodine diet, if prescribed before treatment.
  • Discuss radiation-safety precautions and any arrangements needed at home after treatment with the Nuclear Medicine team.
