IODINE-131 THERAPY – 50 mCi FOR THYROID CANCER

₹50000

At Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, a NABL & NABH-accredited diagnostic centre with specialized services in Nuclear Medicine, you can avail of treatment called Iodine-131 Therapy for Thyroid Cancer. The radioactive iodine treatment might be indicated in certain patients with differentiated thyroid cancer to remove any thyroid tissue left following surgery and/or to treat thyroid cancer cells that are still taking up iodine.

About Iodine-131 Therapy – 50 mCi for Thyroid Cancer

In some types of thyroid cancer, such as differentiated thyroid cancer (papillary or follicular), iodine-131 therapy is directed toward the area of the thyroid. In some clinical situations, if radioactive iodine treatment is deemed appropriate, it is used. The treatment is aimed at the thyroid cells that take up iodine and could damage any thyroid tissue that remains or the chosen cancer cells. This activity can be performed by patients with the following clinical diagnosis, disease, treatment history, and examination and recommendation by the treating specialist:

What is Iodine-131 Therapy?

Radioactive iodine is an iodine isotope that is easily taken up by the thyroid cells. Then, it emits radiation, and the radiation from it will hit the cells that absorbed the iodine. Iodine-131 treatment is recommended for thyroid cancer to kill off any residual thyroid tissue (after thyroid surgery) or to treat some deposits of iodine in the cancer. It is often administered by mouth as a capsule or liquid, by a specialist, and generally not administered into the body. Each patient will have an activity and treatment program based on his/her clinical condition and medical expectations.

Common Reasons for Iodine-131 Therapy – 50 mCi

  • Post-Surgical Remnant Ablation: May be used to destroy remaining thyroid tissue following thyroidectomy when clinically indicated.
  • Differentiated Thyroid cancer: May be considered in specific patients diagnosed with Papillary or Follicular tumour.
  • Selected Low Risk/Intermediate Risk Cases: May be considered when patient risk assessment and treatment plan are considered.
  • Iodine-Avid Disease: Will attack cells that still have an iodine-binding ability, the target therapy cells.
  • Individualized Treatment Planning: The activity can be chosen depending on a clinical finding, disease attributes, and treatment objectives.

Conditions Evaluated and Treated

Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma

Selected cases of papillary thyroid cancer may be treated with iodine-131 therapy following surgery to treat disease that remains iodine-avid or to destroy any remnant thyroid tissue that remains.

Follicular Thyroid Carcinoma

Some cancer of the thyroid will still accumulate iodine. There are a few kinds of thyroid cancer that will still absorb the iodine. Radioactive iodine can be used to treat some parts of a thyroid tumor that are still present or some thyroid cancer cells that have spread to other parts of the body.

Residual Thyroid Tissue

Following thyroid surgery, there might be remaining thyroid tissue. If ablation of the remnant is included in the treatment, iodine-131 can destroy this tissue.

Persistent or Recurrent Thyroid Cancer

Some patients with abnormal tissue that absorbs iodine may be candidates for radioactive iodine therapy in recurrent or persistent differentiated thyroid cancer.
