IODINE-131 THERAPY – 100 mCi FOR THYROID CANCER

₹125000

Get your iodine-131 therapy for Thyroid cancer from a Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, NABL & NABH accredited centre. This special radioiodine therapy can be administered as part of an individualized treatment plan in selected persons with differentiated thyroid cancer to destroy remaining thyroid tissue or to treat any tissue that is iodine-avid (stores iodine).

About Iodine-131 Therapy – 100 mCi for Thyroid Cancer

Targeted radionuclide treatment for certain thyroid cancers, such as papillary and follicular thyroid carcinoma (in the differentiated group of thyroid cancers), is called iodine-131 therapy. The treatment takes two forms: delivering radiation to the thyroid cells which have taken up iodine to destroy the remaining thyroid tissue, and to cancer cells that still can take up iodine. Treatment and the amount of activity are tailored to the diagnosis and disease status set by the specialist treating those receiving this service and the investigations and treatment objectives they have set.

What is Iodine-131 Therapy?

Radioiodine, or iodine-131, is a radioactive isotope of iodine that has the ability to be taken up by the body's pathways of iodine metabolism and to attack thyroid cells. After injection, it releases radiation that can kill the specific thyroid cells. With regard to thyroid cancer, Iodine-131 would then be used after thyroid surgery when some thyroid tissue remains, or to control selected metastatic disease which is avid for iodine. Treatment usually involves oral use of a capsule or liquid, under the supervision of a specialist. The activities, follow-up plan, and timelines will depend on the individual clinical assessment.

Common Reasons for Iodine-131 Therapy – 100 mCi

  • Post-Surgical Remnant Ablation: May be recommended to destroy residual thyroid tissue following thyroidectomy.
  • Differentiated Thyroid Cancer: For some people who have papillary or follicular thyroid cancer.
  • Persistent Thyroid Tissue: May be used to treat thyroid tissue that remains after surgery if clinically indicated.
  • Selected Metastatic Disease: May be an option for thyroid cancer that is spreading to areas where iodine is active.
  • Treatment Based on Risk Assessment: An activity is prescribed, depending on the necessary disease characteristics and goals of the treatment.

Conditions Evaluated and Treated

Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma

In some papillary thyroid cancer cases, the thyroid residual tissue might be destroyed with iodine-131 therapy after surgery.

Follicular Thyroid Carcinoma

Certain types of thyroid cancer can take up iodine in the body. If a patient has any iodine-avid cancer cells that have persisted or spread, radioiodine therapy can help to target those cells.

Residual Thyroid Tissue

If surgery is performed on the thyroid gland, there might be a small amount of thyroid tissue left. If ablation of remnant is indicated and is possible, iodine-131 can be administered to alter this tissue.

Iodine-Avid Metastatic Thyroid Cancer

Other types of differentiated thyroid cancer may break away from the original tumour and travel to other organs and remain capable of taking up iodine. If it's appropriate, Iodine-131 can also be used to treat these deposits.
