IODINE-131 THERAPY FOR HYPERTHYROIDISM

₹18000

Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy offers Iodine-131 Therapy for Hyperthyroidism at an NABL- and NABH-accredited diagnostic centre. It is a method that uses radioactive isotopes and has a targeted effect on the hyperactive thyroid cells (which treat high thyroxine production). It is suggested for a few patients suffering from hyperthyroidism who have been assessed by an expert.

About Iodine-131 Therapy for Hyperthyroidism

Targeted therapy with iodine-131 is used to control an overactive thyroid gland. Iodine is an element found in nature and a substance that the thyroid can take up to make thyroid hormones. The radioactive iodine is used in this way to suppress thyroid activity over time. Treatment may help to normalize excessive production of thyroid hormones and is a proven option for some patients with hyperthyroidism.

What is Iodine-131 Therapy?

Radioiodine is usually given in a capsule or liquid to ingest. It's taken up by thyroid cells after it has been administered. The radioactive iodine (Iodine-131) is administered and is slowly toxic to the overactive thyroid tissue, making it less efficient in producing thyroid hormones. This effect is a slow one, and is only observed over a series of weeks or months, and then monitored by monitoring the blood tests undertaken subsequently. After treatment, some patients may have an underactive thyroid and may need to take thyroid hormone for life. The activity given is related to the underlying thyroid condition, size of the gland, iodine uptake, thyroid function and specialist opinion.

Common Reasons for Iodine-131 Therapy for Hyperthyroidism

  • Graves' Disease: Use may be considered on an individual basis for its antithyroid properties.
  • Persistent Hyperthyroidism: May be considered if hyperthyroidism does not go away after medical treatment.
  • Medication Intolerance: May be considered as an option for certain patients who are not able to take antithyroid drugs.
  • Recurrent Hyperthyroidism: May be prescribed if previous treatment is indicated and symptoms and/or abnormal thyroid hormone levels recur.
  • Long-Term Disease Management: Is a treatment method for a specific patient that requires long-term treatment for overactive thyroid.

Conditions Evaluated and Treated

Graves' Disease

Graves' disease is an autoimmune condition characterized by overproduction of thyroid hormone. Treatment with radioactive iodine-131 may reduce thyroid activity and hormone production in selected patients with Graves' disease vs. iodine-131 can decrease thyroid activity and hormone levels.

Toxic Multinodular Goitre

Too much thyroid hormone due to several nodes of the thyroid gland. Radioactive iodine may help to decrease the amount of thyroid hormone, and it is used to treat overactive thyroid tissue.

Toxic Thyroid Adenoma

A toxic adenoma is a lump of the thyroid that makes thyroid hormones without the normal regulation of the thyroid. Radioactive iodine treatment (I-131) can decrease the function of the overactive piece of thyroid.

Persistent or Recurrent Hyperthyroidism

Medical treatment is not successful in some patients, and either hyperthyroidism or recurrence occurs in others. Specialist evaluation might determine that radioactive iodine is a definite therapy.

Thyroid Hormone Overproduction

Overproduction of the thyroid hormone can lead to palpitations, weight loss, tingling in the fingers and toes, sweating, feeling hot, and feeling anxious. A treatment with iodine-131 may reduce thyroid hormone levels by destroying the overactive thyroid cells.

Book Your Iodine-131 Therapy for Hyperthyroidism

Contact Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy to set up an appointment for more detailed information and guidance about the treatment. Bring a thyroid function test, thyroid uptake and thyroid scan reports, medical records and previous treatment to the specialist for review. The treatment and prescribed activity will be decided based on the assessment carried out by the treating specialist on suitability.

Test information: Fasting NOT needed

Reporting: Within 24 hours*

  • Fasting is not required unless specifically advised by the Nuclear Medicine specialist.
  • Bring your recent thyroid function test reports, thyroid uptake and scan reports, doctor's prescription, and previous treatment records.
  • Inform the specialist about all medicines you are taking, particularly antithyroid medicines, thyroid hormone medicines, and iodine-containing supplements.
  • Follow the specialist's instructions about stopping or adjusting antithyroid medication before treatment. Do not discontinue any medicine on your own.
  • Inform the specialist if you have recently undergone a CT scan or other investigation involving iodine-based contrast.
  • Inform the specialist if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Iodine-131 therapy is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Follow a low-iodine diet before treatment only if specifically advised by your treating specialist.
  • Discuss the possible need for thyroid hormone replacement and radiation-safety precautions after treatment with the specialist.
