Visit Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy at an NABL & NABH-accredited diagnostic centre, which is an advanced diagnostic imaging centre. Dobutamine Stress Echocardiography is a special cardiac examination performed with a medication to place stress on the heart, and with ultrasound imaging to check cardiac function and identify any abnormalities that could be signs of poor blood supply to the heart muscle.
Dobutamine Stress Echo is a cardiac imaging exam that is performed during increased work (stress) on the heart with an intravenous drug known as dobutamine, without requiring any type of invasive cardiac examination. It is a good option for patients who cannot do a good exercise stress test on a treadmill and/or for whom an exercise stress test on a treadmill is not an appropriate test. The images of the ultrasound are obtained at rest (without any activity) and during different stages induced by medication of the beating heart during the examination. These images are then compared by the doctor to determine the heart wall motion, pumping function, and changes that could indicate myocardial ischemia. It may be recommended for some patients who are thought to have coronary artery disease or are not feeling well for some reason related to their heart, or for some medical problems they have concerning the function of the heart while they are exercising.
Dobutamine Stress Echocardiography (DSE) involves controlled doses of dobutamine and an echocardiogram. This drug causes the heart to work harder and produces a faster heart rate, enabling the doctor to test how well the heart does its job while under stress, without having to exercise the person. Ultrasound pictures are taken prior to and throughout the administration of medicine. The patient's heart rate, blood pressure, ECG, symptoms, and the patient's response to the heart are always monitored while checking in the process.
Common Reasons for Stress Echo for Dobutamine
Dobutamine Stress Echo can be a useful technique in identifying variations in the movement of the heart walls that may occur if the blood supply to the heart muscle is either decreased or cut off when the heart muscle must work harder. This information might be utilized while checking in a suspected case of coronary artery disease.
Myocardial ischemia is a condition where there is not enough blood to the heart muscle. Examination detects changes, whether at rest or during stress, that may be signs of ischemia, particularly in the regions of wall motion defect.
The test assesses how well every section of the heart (wall) moves. The findings of the difference between the rest and stress images may be useful in determining the regions in the heart that fail to respond in a normal way to the greater cardiac demands.
The results of the exam provide information on the unstressed and stressed contraction and pumping function of the left ventricle. Such results might be used to evaluate particular cardiac diseases.
In patients who aren't able to complete sufficient physical exercise, Dobutamine Stress Echo may be helpful in evaluating chest discomfort or shortness of breath that is suspected to be due to a heart problem. Interpretation of results in the patient's clinical context.
In a few patients, these abnormalities of the valve can be assessed by employing a method known as stress echo, which tests how these abnormalities affect cardiac function during a stress test. This should be individually chosen according to the doctor's clinical indication.
In some patients with a known heart disease, the test can be useful in obtaining further information regarding cardiac function and/or inducible ischemia. Cardiologist's treatment is used for decision-making.
Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy Lab is an NABL & NABH Accredited Diagnostic Centre offering cutting-edge diagnostics, focusing on keeping the patient happy and ensuring the appropriate examination procedures are in place, and the results are reported promptly and accurately. We aim to help our patients through the cardiac testing process and conduct cardiac medication-induced stress testing (CMST) under supervision and monitoring.
Please call Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy for appointment information and instructions for preparation if you are receiving a recommendation for a Dobutamine Stress Echo to help diagnose suspected coronary artery disease, cardiac symptoms, or cardiac function under stress. Bring your medicines with you, previous ECG, echo, and cardiac investigation reports, and your current medication orders. Discuss all current heart problems, allergies, and medications you are taking before the exam with the medical staff.
Test information: Fasting for 4–6 hours is generally required.
Reporting: Within 24 hours*
