X-RAY ARMS AP & LAT

₹1000

The X-Ray Arms AP & LAT can be carried out at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, an NABL- and NABH-accredited diagnostic centre for state-of-the-art radiology services. With X-Ray Arms AP & LAT, the doctor can be able to see what the bones look like of your arm in both AP (anteroposterior) and LAT (lateral) views. The X-Ray Arms AP & LAT will reveal bone changes which may be associated with injury.

About X-Ray Arms AP & LAT

An XRay arms AP & LAT is a diagnostic X-ray that is performed to get 2 types of pictures of the bones in your arm. This will help the doctor and/or radiologist look at a patient's bones and see if they are in place and in proper alignment. The AP & LAT can be used in the doctor's search for problems with your humerus (long bone in your upper arm), or to target specific areas of your arm. The exact area of your arm that is examined will be based on the doctor's prescription. The test is sometimes used to help assess traumatic injuries, suspected fractures, bone abnormalities, and to assess bone healing following treatment. It will assist your doctor's decision regarding additional imaging, splinting, referrals to specialists, and/or additional treatments.

What is X-Ray Arms AP & LAT?

A diagnostic imaging device that provides low levels of ionising radiation for the imaging of bones and some other areas of the body. Two images are taken to obtain a good view of the bone.

  • AP View (Anteroposterior): Captures the bone from a front-to-back direction and helps demonstrate its length, general structure, and alignment.
  • LAT View (Lateral): Captures the bone from the side, providing additional information about alignment, angulation, and displacement.

Combined, it can be useful in detecting any fractures, positioning of the bone fragments, and special abnormalities. If you need to look at the site of the elbow or the shoulder joint, then certain images will need to be used. This is normally a fast process, and cuts or injections are not required. The radiology department will make every effort to position your arm in the most optimal position for obtaining the best images.

Common Reasons for X-Ray Arms AP & LAT

  • Arm Pain: Investigation of persistent or unexplained pain involving the imaged arm bone.
  • Injury/Trauma: Falling from height, on the road, sports injury, or direct impact.
  • Suspected fracture: Check of the humerus or other specified arm bone for a fracture.
  • Swelling and Tenderness: Evaluating the symptoms of the impact or injury following an injury.
  • Arm Function: Assessment of bony lesions that could compromise arm lifting/power and/or arm movement.
  • Bone deformities – visible bone abnormalities or suspected abnormalities in bone shape and/or alignment.
  • Follow-Up after Fracture: Observation of the position of the broken bone and its healing after casting, immobilization, or surgery.
  • Post-Traumatic Assessment: Assessment of continued symptoms following an accident or injury.
  • Bone Lesion Investigation: The first appraisal of any abnormalities noted during clinical examination.
  • Preoperative Assessment: Imaging as requested to help assess a bone injury that has been identified before a scheduled procedure.
  • Previous Findings Review – looking to see if the film images/radiographs have changed over time.

Conditions Evaluated

Arm Fractures

When you get any fracture in your arm bone, it's usually diagnosed with X-rays. The AP & LAT views will give a general idea of what type of fracture you have and help establish the location of the fracture. It can also help to identify any displaced and/or angulated bone fragments. This can assist your physician in determining your treatment. Some other perspectives or a scan may be required in some cases.

Bone Alignment and Displacement

The two views allow one to determine the location of one's bones and any fragments. Can help to identify any angulation, displacement, or other alignment problems.

Bone Deformities

This can expose some malformations of the shape, lines, and position of bones. This may be as a result of the previous injury, developmental issues, or other skeletal issues. If an abnormality is detected, other tests may be suggested, and X-rays would be taken.

Bone Lesions and Structural Abnormalities

X-rays may reveal changes in bone density, contour, or structure. These findings can be associated with different conditions and should be interpreted alongside the patient's symptoms, medical history, and clinical examination. Further imaging or investigations may be required to determine the cause.

Joint-Related Abnormalities

Some defects of your shoulder and/or elbow will be noticeable if you have shoulders or elbows in your photos. A specific xray may be needed if your symptoms are focused on your elbow and/or shoulder. The actual joint analyzed will be based on the area requested.

Fracture Healing and Follow-Up

Follow-up X-rays may help assess fracture alignment and evidence of bone healing after casting, immobilisation, or surgery. The need for repeat imaging and any changes to treatment depend on the findings and the treating clinician's assessment.

Why Choose Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy?

Book Your X-Ray Arms AP & LAT

If your doctor has recommended you for an X-Ray Arms AP & LAT, please contact us to book an appointment. Please bring your prescription along with any previous X-rays, imaging reports, or relevant medical records. If your arm is visibly deformed, you are experiencing severe pain, or any numbness, weakness, or changes in colour to your hand after an injury, please seek prompt medical attention. Do not move your arm if you suspect it may be fractured until you have seen a healthcare professional.

Test information: Usually, no fasting is required.

Reporting: Within 24 hours*

  • Fasting is usually not required for an X-ray of the arm.
  • Bring your doctor's prescription and any previous X-rays or relevant medical reports.
  • Remove jewellery, watches, and other metal objects from the area being examined.
  • Inform the radiology staff if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant.
  • Inform the staff about any recent injury, severe pain, swelling, numbness, or difficulty moving your arm.
