Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy is an NABL & NABH-accredited diagnostic centre where you can get state-of-the-art radiology & diagnostic imaging services. X-ray Sinogram is a special type of specialized contrast test that is performed in order to see an abnormal sinus tract or channel that leads to the skin. It can be helpful in assessing the course and length of the tract, its extent, and communication possible with deeper tissues and other tissues.
An X-ray Sinogram is a study of the body to see if there is an abnormal passage (sinus tract) from a deeper part of the body to the skin. The procedure involves carefully introducing a suitable contrast agent through the external opening of the sinus tract and obtaining X-ray images to assess its course. The study may help in establishing the direction of the tract, the branch and association of the tract with other structures. It's thought of when the sinus doesn't go away, when fluid keeps building up in the sinus, or when surgery is needed to determine the exact anatomy before treatment.
A sinogram is an X-ray examination performed after contrast medium is introduced through an accessible sinus opening to outline the tract, provided it is patent and can be adequately opacified. The contrast is carefully introduced via the sinus opening under adequate clinical supervision and the radiologist is able to get images of the tract. The examination may demonstrate the course, extent, branching, or communication of the sinus tract, although not all extensions or connections may be visualised. The views used for technique and imaging will be dependent upon the location of the sinus and the clinical question.
A sinogram can be helpful to delineate a chronic sinus tract and demonstrate the course of the tract through the adjacent tissues. This information could help to understand the size of the abnormal channel.
A sinus can form or remain in the area of the surgery. Contrast imaging may help to clarify the tract and may aid in providing information that may be helpful if further therapy is being considered.
Some of the sinus tracts are chronically or recurrently infected locally. The sinogram may reveal the course of the tract, but further examination may be necessary and additional tests conducted to determine the cause.
Depending on the location and accessibility, the study may demonstrate communication with adjacent cavities or structures. Additional imaging may be required if findings are inconclusive. Further imaging may be needed if there is a complex anatomy or inconclusive results.
In some instances, there may be an associated history of retained foreign body or a history of previous injury. A sinogram may help delineate the tract, but it does not reliably identify every retained foreign body or establish the cause of the sinus. Further evaluation may be required.
Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy is a NABL & NABH Accredited Diagnostic Centre providing state-of-the-art Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Pathology services. Our imaging emphasis is on the correct examination procedures, quality diagnostic images, patient care, and reliable reporting. If the requested examination is not a routine part of the examination, patients are informed regarding the examination requested and how this is related to their overall care.
If you've been referred to an X-ray Sinogram, you can reach Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy for appointment information and to inquire about when it will be available for examination by your doctor. Bring your prescription, imaging reports from your previous appointments, and any helpful treatment records/surgical history, if you have one available, so that the multidisciplinary team can discuss your clinical need.
