The 18F-DOPA PET-CT scan evaluates the use of amino acids in the brain. It involves a small dosage of a radioactive material, 18F-DOPA, to demonstrate the sections of the brain that are metabolically normal.
It is a combination of PET to determine how the brain functions and CT to provide detailed images of the brain structure. We have the latest PET-CT machines at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy to ensure that the findings are the right ones.
Why This Test Is Performed?
The 18F -DOPA PET is suggested by doctors where more metabolic information is required than that provided by regular scans. It is often used to:
Assess possible or known brain tumors.
Differentiate between active and non-active tissue.
Examine atypical amino acids absorption in the brain parts.
Clarify the findings of the MRI/CT scan.
Follow-up/checking on prior diagnosed cases.
This scan is an additional metabolic data employing which doctors can use to make a more accurate diagnosis.
How is the Procedure Performed?
It is a non-invasive procedure performed in a regulated diagnostic setting. The typical steps include:
Radiotracer Administration: 18F-DOPA is administered in a small dosage that is delivered via a vein.
Uptake Phase: The tracer is absorbed within the brain as you sit or lie down in the comfort of the phase.
Imaging Process: PET-CT captures both functional and structural images.
Image Acquisition: Detailed, clear images aid in detecting the location of the tracer, which is abnormally high.
Duration: The scan typically takes 30-45 minutes; it does not include the uptake time.
Important Note
The test can be undertaken in two days plan. The radiotracer is typically deposited on one day (such as Thursday). Depression scan may be completed on the same day or the following day, depending on your schedule and protocol.
This is the best way to do it as it gives more meaningful results.
The patients are monitored throughout to keep you comfortable and safe.
Preparation Before the Scan
To achieve the optimal effectiveness, the patients are typically informed to:
No food within 4-6 hours before the scan.
Drink water unless directed to the contrary.
Bring loose and comfortable clothes and no metal accessories.
Advise the team about any drugs that you take.
Notify the staff about whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Preparation instructions can be different depending on the clinical circumstances.
Key Diagnostic Advantages
Sensitive to detecting brain metabolism.
Better lesion localisation and characterisation contrasted with routine scans.
Indicates accurately where areas of activity are.
Compatibility with MRI tests.
Helps to diagnose complicated neurological disorders.
This scan is highly applicable in cases where a metabolic scrutiny of the brain tissue is needed.
Safety and Scan Environment
There is no harmful dose used in the scan, and it has rigid safety protocols. It is pain-free, and it is not surgical. Quickly trained personnel observe the entire procedure to ensure that it is safe, comfortable, and easy.
Report and Result Availability
The reports will usually be prepared between 24 and 48 hours. They contain comprehensive PET- CT results. Online reports can be delivered in a convenient manner. Your referring doctor should review the results.
Book Your Scan
When you require superior brain scan technology and reliable outcomes, then book your 18F-DOPA PET-CT scan with us, Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy. Our mission is to provide quality imaging, comfortable care, and fast reporting.
Test information: Fasting: 4 hours
Reporting: Within 2 hours*
Fasting for 4 hours is needed.
Please carry all medical documents, including doctor referrals, previous reports of any CT, MRI etc.
Always try to reach 15 min before appointment time as the radiopharmaceutical (tracer) used for 18F-DOPA PET-CT has a short half-life, and any delay may cause tracer decay, and you may be rescheduled for another day.
Please carry identification proof such as an Aadhar card, pan card etc.
On many occasions, the 18F-DOPA Brain PET-CT is accompanied by 18F-FDG PET-CT for differential diagnosis. You may be asked to come on another day for the same with same preparations.
After registration and payment, the patient's medical history is taken, including checking referral, treatment, investigation records, history of last meal and any allergy to contrast media, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, etc., depending on the clinical requirement.
An intravenous cannula is fixed for tracer and contrast media administration.
The patient is injected with radioactive material (18F-DOPA) and advised to relax for a duration to allow the tracer to be distributed with an adequate target to background ratio.
The patient is taken for the scan, which may take around 15 minutes. Recorded images are verified, and the patient is advised accordingly in need of a repeat or delayed images.
Once these sequences are over, the patient is free to have a meal and go home. The entire procedure takes approximately 2–3 hours. In the case of delayed images, this time may increase.
