24000

The 18F-FDG Brain PET-CT Scan is a complex imaging test that is implemented to assess the metabolism and structure of the brain. It involves the use of a radiotracer referred to as 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) to identify regions of abnormal glucose metabolism in the brain.

It is a scan that is a mixture of Positron Emission Tomography (PET), which measures the functional activity, and Computed Tomography (CT), which forms detailed images of the anatomy. Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy provides state-of-the-art PET-CT service to provide the most precise imaging findings that the doctor should recommend.

Why is the Test Recommended?

It is recommended that an 18F-FDG Brain PET-CT Scan be performed on patients with any neurological symptoms or suspected disorders of the brain. It comes in handy especially when:

  • Imaging brain metabolism in suspected or known neurological disorders.
  • Locating points of irregular glucose processes in the brain.
  • Helping in diagnosis in inconclusive cases (MRI or CT).
  • Follow-ups involving tracking of metabolic alterations.
  • Evaluation of brain functioning in patients with inexplicable cognitive or neurological symptoms.

This is a scan that is very useful in terms of metabolism because it would assist the doctors in having a better insight into how the brain activity works.

How is the Procedure Performed?

It is not an invasive procedure and is performed under the supervision of experts. It typically includes:

Radiotracer Injection

One small localized dose of 18F-FDG is the intravenous injection.

Uptake Period

The patient lies down to ensure that the tracer is taken up by the brain tissues.

PET-CT Imaging

The scanner is able to take detailed images of not only metabolic activity but also the structures.

Image Analysis

PET and CT scans are fused to give a view of the brain in its entirety.

Duration

The imaging procedure is normally 45-60 minutes (without uptake period).

Patients are constantly checked to make sure that they are safe and comfortable.

Preparation Before the Scan

It is better to prepare properly to get the right results. Patients are in general advised to:

  • Starve 4-6 hours before scan.
  • Keep hydrated (as advised)
  • Its loose and comfortable clothes are free of metal.
  • Disclose the team of medications or past imaging reports.
  • Inform the employees whether pregnant or breastfeeding.

These guidelines are likely to enhance effective imaging.

Benefits and Diagnostic Value

The 18F-FDG Brain PET-CT Scan has many strengths:

  • Identifies disordered glucose metabolism of the brain.
  • Offers high-resolution interferential and anatomical imaging.
  • Assists in the correct diagnosis of complicated neurological disorders.
  • Substitutes MRI and standard CT scans.
  • Helps in the assessment of conditions such as dementia, seizures, and brain tumors.

This scan can give the most detailed review of the health of the brain because it combines PET and CT imaging.

Safety and Patient Experience

The scan is carefully done with a low and regulated dose of radiotracer and is performed safely. It is not invasive, painless, and in most cases, it is well-tolerated. To guarantee patient comfort and safety, they are monitored throughout the procedure.

Report and Result Timeline

  • Reports are usually made within 24-48 hours.
  • Add in depth analysis of metabolism and the structure of the brain.
  • Convenience in the form of digital reports is given.
  • A review of results with your referring physician should occur.

Test Information

  • Fasting: 4–6 hours
  • Reporting Time: Within 24–48 hours

Test information: Fasting: 4-6 hours

Reporting: Within 2 hours*

  • Patient should be fasting for 4-6 hours before the appointment.
  • Drinking plain water is allowed and encouraged. There is no need to hold urine.
  • Diabetic patients should NOT take anti-diabetic medicines, including insulin, on the appointment day. If fasting blood sugar is more than 200 mg/dL, kindly consult your physician and get it controlled, and it should be below 200 mg/dL on the day of the scan without taking any anti-diabetic medicine or insulin.
  • Please carry all previous medical records, i.e. doctor's referral, reports of previous PET-CT, CT scan, MRI, biopsy etc. and the treatment records. Previously, if PET-CT is done, kindly carry CD to compare any changes since the last study.
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol, or drugs that may affect cerebral glucose metabolism.
  • Always try to reach 15 minutes before appointment time as the radiopharmaceutical (tracer) used for 18F-FDG PET-CT has a short half-life, and any delay may cause tracer decay, and you may be rescheduled for another day.
  • Please carry identification proof such as an Aadhar card, pan card etc.
