The 18F-FDG PET-CT Triple Phase with CT Whole Abdomen is the latest diagnostic imaging test that is applied to examine the metabolic activity and structure of abdominal organs. It is a scan that employs the radiotracer 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) and a triple-phase scan protocol to bring out very detailed information about the abnormal metabolism and characterization of the lesion.

This test provides both the functional and structural data of a subject during a single session by incorporating Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Computed Tomography (CT). At Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, we have the best PET-CT systems that provide accurate and reliable results of imaging, as suggested by your doctor.

Why is the Scan Recommended?

It is a scan recommended in case a detailed and thorough assessment of the abdomen is needed. It is commonly used for:

  • Diagnosis and evaluation of liver and pancreatic lesions, as well as other abdominal organs.
  • Assessment of the dysfunctional metabolism of tissues.
  • Distinguishing active disease and post-treatment or inactive alterations.
  • Imaging- Whole abdomen imaging in cases of inconclusive routine scans.
  • Imaging follow-up to check the progress or the response of the disease, depending on the treatment.

The imaging technique in triple phase increases the accuracy of diagnosis and the clinical confidence.

How is the Procedure Performed?

The process is not an invasive procedure, and it is carried out under competent supervision. It typically includes:

Radiotracer Injection

The administration of a small controlled dose of 18F-FDG is done intravenously.

Uptake Period

The patient is in a relaxed position to enable adequate circulation of the tracer in the body.

Triple Phase PET-CT Imaging

  • The scans will be done in three phases to assess:
  • Early tracer distribution
  • Median visualization of intermediate lesions.
  • Latent tracer retention or washout.

CT Whole Abdomen

A specific CT scan of the abdomen is carried out to show different details to be correlated with the abdomen.

Duration

The overall imaging procedure lasts a maximum of 45-60 minutes, not including the uptake period.

We observe patients during the procedure to offer them safety and comfort.

Preparation Before the Scan

To obtain correct results, there has to be proper preparation. Patients are normally advised to:

  • Deny oneself food 4-6 hours before the scan.
  • Drink water as instructed
  • Wear slack clothes, no metallic objects on.
  • Report to the team on the existing imaging or past studies on medications.
  • Inform the personnel whether pregnant or lactating.

By adhering to these guidelines, the scan quality and reliability can be enhanced.

Diagnostic Advantages

The 18F-FDG PET- CT Triple Phase with CT Whole Abdomen provides:

  • Increased identification of abnormal metabolic activity.
  • Optical observation of abdominal organs.
  • Multiphase imaging for better lesion characterization.
  • Full-abdominal examination within a session.
  • Correlation of metabolic and anatomical results.

The scan is especially helpful when it comes to complicated cases of the abdomen, and both functional and structural examination is necessary.

Safety and Patient Experience

A low and controlled dose of radiotracer is used in the scan, and safety standards are highly adhered to. It is not invasive and instead painless and tends to be tolerated. The patients are monitored to create maximum comfort and security.

Report and Result Timeline

  • The response time of reports can be as short as 24-48 hours.
  • Enter elaborate findings of all phases of imaging.
  • The convenience of digital reporting is offered.
  • Findings must be discussed with your physician of reference.

Test Information

  • Fasting: 4–6 hours

Reporting Time: Within 24–48 hours*

Test information: Fasting: 4-6 hours

Reporting: Within 2 hours*

  • Patient should be fasting for 4-6 hours before the appointment time.
  • Drinking plain water is allowed and encouraged. There is no need to hold urine.
  • Diabetic patients should NOT take anti-diabetic medicines, including insulin, on the appointment day. In case your fasting blood sugar is more than 200 mg/dL, kindly consult your physician and get it controlled. It should be below 200 mg/dL on the scan day without taking any anti-diabetic medicine or insulin.
  • Please carry all previous medical records, i.e. doctor's referral, reports of previous PET-CT, CT scan, MRI, USG, biopsy etc. and the treatment records. Previously, if PET-CT is done, kindly carry CD to compare any changes since the last study.
  • Please carry a recent Serum Creatinine blood test report. If not done previously, with additional applicable charges, it can be done at the centre. You need not wait extra for the results to come as both tests go parallelly.
  • If the patient is allergic to contrast media, please inform the staff.
  • Female patients must inform their pregnancy status or breastfeeding before injecting radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Always try to reach 15 minutes before appointment time as the radiopharmaceutical (tracer) used for 18F-FDG PET-CT has a short half-life, and any delay may cause tracer decay, and you may be rescheduled for another day.
  • Please carry identification proof such as an Aadhar card, pan card etc.
