You can get your HRCT PNS (AX./COR/SA) at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, an Advanced Radiology and Diagnostic imaging institute that is an NABL & NABH-accredited diagnostic centre. This high-resolution computed tomography (CT) allows for detailed images of the paranasal sinuses with views in the axial plane, coronal plane, and sagittal plane. Helps physicians diagnose inflammation of the sinuses, chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps, abnormal nasal anatomy, sinus blockage, and other abnormalities involving the nose and sinuses.
About HRCT PNS (AX./COR/SA)
It is an advanced form of CT scan that gives detailed images of the paranasal sinuses HRCT PNS. The exam includes (multi-views): imaging high-resolution sinus cavities and drainage pathways, as well as high-resolution surrounding bony structures. This scan may be ordered when: Persistent or recurrent nasal and sinus symptoms despite treatment may warrant further evaluation; You have facial pressure or pain with your nose; You experience trouble smelling. It can also be used to assess sinus anatomy prior to certain ENT surgeries.
What is HRCT PNS (AX./COR/SA)?
An X-ray technique that uses a computer to create detailed images of the air-filled sinuses and surrounding areas:
Axial (AX): Cross sections of sinuses, etc.
Coronal (COR): Provides a view that may be helpful for relationships between the sinuses and nasal cavity, by looking at the sinus drainage pathways.
Sagittal (SA): This is used to help evaluate the sinus anatomy and the presence of any changes in structure from a side aspect.
The views allow for visualisation of the frontal sinus, the ethmoid sinus, the sphenoid sinus and maxillary sinus, the nasal cavity and associated bony formation. Generally, HRCT PNS is carried out without the introduction of any IV contrast as per the clinical indication.
Common Reasons for HRCT PNS (AX./COR/SA)
Chronic sinusitis: Supports the evaluation of ongoing inflammation and alterations in the nasal passages and sinuses.
Sinus infections: Discusses the structures of sinuses and how they may be continuing to form.
Sustained nasal blockage: Can help determine cause (sinus disease, anatomical blockage).
Face pain or pressure: Inspects for sinus abnormalities which could lead to symptoms.
Nasal polyps and sinus obstruction: HRCT may show associated sinus and drainage pathway changes, but clinical examination and nasal endoscopy may be needed to assess polyps directly.
Deviated Nasal Septum: Evaluate deviation of nasal septum and potential impact on other structures of the nose.
Pre-operative planning -Gives detailed anatomical information before selecting ESS.
Persistent nasal or sinus symptoms after treatment: May be advised for further imaging to assess persistent nasal and/or sinus symptoms after treatment.
Possible sinus anatomical variation: Provides the ability to detect anatomical variation of the sinus that can affect the sinus flow or surgery.
Conditions Evaluated
Chronic and Recurrent Sinusitis
HRCT PNS can show mucosal thickening, sinus opacification (partial or complete), and other findings of sinus inflammation. These are important findings for the doctor to understand the severity and extent of sinusitis.
Maxillary Sinus Abnormalities
The scan evaluates the maxillary sinuses, which are located within the maxillary bones of the cheeks.
Frontal and Ethmoid Sinus Disease
The frontal and ethmoid sinuses can be examined using specific pictures of the sinus cavity to assess the presence of sinus inflammation, opacification of the sinuses, and issues with the sinus drainage mechanism.
Sphenoid Sinus Abnormalities
In selected inflammatory or structural abnormalities, HRCT-PNS may assist in diagnosis and allow evaluation of the deeper-lying sphenoid sinuses.
Nasal Polyps and Sinus Obstruction
The scan may show changes associated with the nasal polyps and drainage problems in the sinuses. As additional investigations may be required, this may include clinical examination and/or nasal endoscopy if appropriate.
Deviated Nasal Septum
The deviation of the nasal septum can be demonstrated, and the correlation with the nasal cavity and neighbouring structures may be shown. This information may be valuable to consider when assessing the cause of blocked nasal airflow or to inform the treatment plan.
Bony Changes
High-resolution images help assess the thin bony walls of the sinuses for abnormalities such as thickening, remodelling, or erosion.
Pre-Surgical Sinus Assessment
Taking images from all three directions (axially, coronally, and sagittally) provides a total anatomy view for the ENT specialist, enabling them to devise treatment strategies to meet the individual patient's needs and understand the sinus relationship to adjacent anatomy.

Book Your HRCT PNS (AX./COR/SA)
If you have been prescribed an HRCT PNS (AX./COR/SA) by your doctor, please contact Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy to schedule an appointment and obtain availability information for the HRCT scan. On your way to the consultation, bring your prescription and any old CT scan report, X-rays, or any ENT reports (if any) that relate to this.
Test information: Usually, no fasting is required.
Reporting: Within 24 hours*
Usually, no fasting is required before the scan.
Inform the medical team if you are pregnant or may be pregnant, as CT uses X-rays.
Bring your doctor’s prescription, previous sinus CT scans, X-rays, and relevant ENT reports, if available.
Inform the medical team about any previous nasal or sinus surgery and any recent facial injury.
Remove spectacles, earrings, nose rings, and other metal objects around the head and face before scanning.
Follow the radiology team’s positioning instructions and keep your head still during image acquisition.
This examination is generally performed without intravenous contrast unless otherwise advised by the radiologist.

The radiology team reviews the prescription, symptoms, and relevant medical history.
The patient lies on the CT table, and the head is positioned appropriately for sinus imaging.
The scan is generally performed without intravenous contrast material.
CT images are acquired using X-rays, with axial, coronal, and sagittal reconstructions to examine the paranasal sinuses, nasal cavity, drainage pathways, and surrounding bony structures.
The patient must remain still during scanning to minimise motion artefacts and help obtain clear images.
The radiologist reviews the images for sinus inflammation, mucosal thickening, anatomical variations, bony abnormalities, and other findings relevant to the clinical indication.
The scan is completed, and the patient can usually resume normal activities unless advised otherwise.
