The computed tomography (CT) scan of the dorsal spine and the lumbar spine evaluates abnormal changes in the bones of the spine, spinal degeneration, and fracture of the vertebrae.

What is NCCT Dorsal Lumbar Spine?

Voluntary computed tomography (CT) of the dorsal lumbar spine (Dorsal Lumbar Spine) is a particular computed tomography scan of the spine that looks at the bones and joints of the thoracic and lumbar spine without any injection of a dye. It produces cross-sectional drawings of the vertebrae and their proper alignment, with appropriate details. The scan can be ordered as a result of trauma, if you think a fracture may have occurred in your spine or if there are more detailed changes in bone structure that require evaluation. It can also be employed to determine the conditions of degeneration and deformity of the spine, and some postoperative changes that might occur.

Common Reasons for NCCT Dorsal Lumbar Spine

  • Evaluation of bone spurs, facet joint degeneration, and other age-related changes.
  • Spinal Canal Narrowing: Evaluation of narrowing of nerves or neural exit channel.
  • Spinal Deformity: Assessment of some deformities of the spine and its shapes.
  • Bone Lesions: Assessment of some abnormalities of the bone structure of the vertebrae.
  • Postoperative Assessment: Providing specific bone evaluation after surgical correction of spine deformity, if indicated.
  • Preoperative Planning: Detailed assessment of vertebral anatomy before chosen spine surgery.

Conditions Evaluated

Vertebral Fractures

NCCT will supply detailed images of the vertebrae and help identify vertebral fractures, including compression fractures and fractures of the posterior elements. It can help identify fractures, displaced bone fragments, and associated bony injuries.

Degenerative Spinal Changes

The scan can help identify degenerative changes such as osteophytes, endplate sclerosis, and facet joint degeneration. These findings may contribute to the assessment of back pain when interpreted alongside clinical symptoms.

Spinal Canal and Neural Foramina

The CT may be able to establish these signs of bony narrowing of the spinal canal and neural foramina. Typically,y MRI is also better suited for detailed examination of the soft tissues of the spinal cord, nerve roots, and intervertebral disc.

Vertebral Alignment and Deformities

NCCT can help with assessing abnormal rotation of the spine, spine disorders, and spine curves. The findings could be useful in post-trauma, chronic spinal conditions, and spinal change evaluation.

Facet Joint Abnormalities

The exam provides more specific pictures of the facet (facets) joints, which are located between two neighboring vertebrae. It can help identify the presence of degenerative changes, irregularities of the joints, and selected bony anomalies.

Bone Lesions and Structural Changes

The CT can offer some data on the selected lesions and on abnormal bone density and other deformities of the spine. More imaging examinations might be necessary to figure out how they were caused.

Post-Traumatic and Postoperative Changes

NCCT can also be helpful to evaluate a variety of things after a spine injury or surgery, such as bony healing, alignment of the vertebral bones, and some abnormalities. The results might be useful for informed clinical treatment decisions in the future.

Why Choose Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy?

Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy is an NABL & NABH Accredited Diagnostic Centre, providing state-of-the-art services in the field of Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Pathology in One Place. Appropriate scanning protocols, modern imaging technology, patient safety, and reliable reporting are the focus of our imaging emphasis. The patient is instructed on the exam and precautions to take prior to the exam.

Book Your NCCT Dorsal Lumbar Spine

If your doctor suggests an NCCT Dorsal Lumbar Spine examination, contact Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy for scheduling information. Bring any prescription medications, old X-rays, MRI (and CT) scans, and medical records with you if they exist. Talk with the imaging team about your possibility of pregnancy before starting imaging.

Test information: Usually, no special fasting is required.

Reporting: Within 24 hours*

  • Usually, no special fasting is required before the scan.
  • Inform the medical team if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, as CT uses X-rays.
  • Bring your doctor’s prescription, previous X-rays, CT or MRI reports, and relevant medical records.
  • Remove metal objects from the area being scanned and follow the staff’s instructions.
  • Inform the team about any previous spine surgery, recent injury, or difficulty remaining still during the examination.
  • Follow the instructions given by the radiology team before and during the scan.
