Book an NCCT FACE (AXIAL & CORONAL) test at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, which offers advanced services. It is a special non-contrast computed tomography (CT) study; highly detailed radiologic images of the facial bones and surrounding anatomical areas are provided in both axial and coronal planes. It can be useful in determining the diagnosis of a fracture (including facial), deformity, trauma, and other structural abnormal conditions of the face.
About NCCT Face (Axial & Coronal)
NCCT Face is a special imaging technique that takes images of the face and facial bones without the need for an intravenously injected contrast material. It can provide a detailed cross-sectional picture of the bone and some of the surrounding tissues. Facial structures, upper and lower jaw, cheekbones, nose, some bone displacement, and facial injuries are ideal areas for the examination to help determine the extent of the injury to the face. Axial and coronal re-slicing helps to achieve a correct assessment of the anatomy on both planes.
What is NCCT Face (Axial & Coronal)?
Non-Contrast Computed Tomography (NCCT), also called a “CT scan.” The test is done by X-ray and computation to produce detailed images of the face without contrast material. The scan consists of two major imaging planes:
Axial: Cross-sectional images that help evaluate facial structures at different levels.
Coronal: Front-facing images that help assess the facial bones and their anatomical relationships.
Common Reasons for NCCT Face (Axial & Coronal)
Facial Trauma: Facial injuries resulting from accidents, falls, or direct trauma.
Suspected Facial Fractures: Assessment of fractures of the facial bones (nose, cheek, maxilla, mandible, and other facial bones).
Examination of possible irregularities of the face from swelling and/or tenderness.
Assessment of damage to the upper and lower jaw.
Nasal Bone Abnormalities involve: Evaluation of fractures, deformities, and structural abnormalities of the nasal bones.
Cheekbone Injuries: Exam of a person with suspected broken cheekbones.
Foreign Body Assessment: Facial injuries suspected of having radiopaque foreign bodies.
Pre-operation sequence: facial bone structure special analysis before specific surgery.
Previous injuries via follow-up: Post-trauma assessment of fracture alignment possible for clinically indicated injuries.
Conditions Evaluated
Facial Bone Fractures
In order to create detailed images of the bone structure of the face, NCCT may be performed and can be useful in defining the location of the fractures, which may affect the nasal and other bones in the face, such as cheekbones, the maxilla, and the mandible. Can demonstrate fractures, dislocations, and any associated bone injury.
Zygomatic Bone Fractures
The zygomatic bones make up the bump of the cheek and part of the eye socket or eye orbit. A computed tomography scan or X-ray can help determine if these bones are fractured or displaced and if there are other injuries associated with them.
Maxillary and Mandibular Abnormalities
The scan may prove helpful in trying to determine whether or not the upper or lower jaw bones are broken, abnormal, or have formed in a different shape. Close-ups of the injuries could be helpful in determining the injury's severity and treatment.
Midface Injuries
NCCT may help assess fractures of the nasal bones and other midface structures following trauma. It can also reveal the corresponding deformities of the neighbouring structures of the face.
Facial Bone Deformities
The examination can provide comprehensive information about all the deformities of the facial skeleton that are congenital, posttraumatic,c and other. This information can be utilized as a clinical aid and as a planning aid for surgical therapy.
Other Structural Abnormalities
Selected bony lesions, irregularities and other structural abnormalities of the facial skeleton may be revealed by NCCT. Further investigations may be required based upon these findings.
Why Choose Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy?
Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy is an NABL/NABH Accredited Diagnostic Centre, which provides you with services for your Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Pathology needs. We strive to keep our patients safe and up to date with the latest technology for diagnosis and ensure that the patient plays an active part in the scanning protocol and is provided with a reliable report. Prior to examination, patients are advised about the procedure and other measures they need to take.
Book Your NCCT Face (Axial & Coronal)
Please contact Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy if your doctor has recommended you have an NCCT Face scan, for details of when this scan can take place. Bring any medical records, previous X-rays, medications, or CT scans with you. Let the imaging personnel know you may be pregnant before undergoing an imaging test.
Test information: Fasting NOT needed
Reporting: Within 24 hours*
Usually, no fasting is required before an NCCT Face scan.
Bring your prescription, previous X-rays, CT scans, and other relevant medical records.
Inform the radiology team if you are pregnant or suspect that you may be pregnant, as CT uses X-rays.
Remove spectacles, earrings, nose jewellery, dentures if removable, and other metal objects around the face and head.
Inform the staff about any recent facial injury, previous facial surgery, or suspected foreign body.
Follow the radiology team's instructions and keep your head still during image acquisition.
Intravenous contrast is not routinely used for this examination.
The radiology team reviews the referral, symptoms, and available previous imaging reports.
The patient is positioned on the CT table with the head placed appropriately for facial imaging.
The CT scanner uses X-rays to acquire detailed cross-sectional images of the facial bones and surrounding structures without intravenous contrast.
Axial images are obtained, and coronal reconstructions are prepared according to the scan protocol.
The patient must remain still during image acquisition to minimize motion artefacts.
The images are reviewed for facial fractures, displacement, deformities, and other structural abnormalities. Detectable foreign bodies may also be identified depending on their material and location.
A radiologist interprets the findings alongside the patient's clinical history and other available investigations.
