Schedule an NCCT PNS examination at a diagnostic centre by the leading institute of CT and Radiology services, Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, which is an NABL- and NABH-accredited facility, to get a detailed evaluation of the paranasal sinuses and surrounding facial structures. Non-Contrast Computed Tomography (NCCT) of the Paranasal Sinuses (PNS) is a radiographic study that produces high-quality images of the sinus cavity, nasal passages, facial bones, and other adjacent structures. It can assist in analyzing sinusitis, nasal blockage, chronic sinus complaints, polyps, anatomical abnormalities, trauma, and other abnormalities of the nose and paranasal sinus area.
About NCCT PNS
NCCT PNS is a special computed tomography (CT) scan of the sinuses around the nose that doctors can use to identify problems of the paranasal sinuses, nasal cavity, and adjacent facial structures. It has excellent differentiation of the sinus cavities and bone elements and may be the preferred imaging modality to evaluate the sinuses when more detailed information of the sinus is necessary for chronic or recurrent sinus complaints. This examination can be useful in identifying inflammation and an accumulation of fluids or mucus, obstruction of the sinus drainage pathways, abnormalities in the paranasal sinuses, and other diseases affecting the sinuses.
What is NCCT PNS?
NCCT PNS is computed tomography (CT) performed on the paranasal sinuses. It is an excellent modality for imaging the bony structures and sinus anatomy. The scan can reveal the condition of the frontal, maxillary, ethmoid, and sphenoid sinuses, the cavity of the nose, and the surrounding structures of the face.
Common Reasons for NCCT PNS
Persistent or recurrent sinus-related symptoms
Nasal blockage or difficulty breathing through the nose
Facial pain, pressure, or heaviness
Suspected chronic or recurrent sinusitis, or acute sinusitis with complications or no response to treatment.
Evaluation of sinus drainage pathway obstruction
Assessment of nasal polyps or other soft tissue changes
Evaluation before selected sinus or nasal surgery
Assessment of facial or sinus trauma
Further evaluation of abnormalities seen on other imaging
Conditions Evaluated
Sinusitis
NCCT PNS can help identify mucosal thickening, fluid accumulation, opacification, and other changes associated with sinus inflammation.
Chronic Sinus Disease
The examination provides detailed anatomical information that can help evaluate persistent or recurrent sinus problems and associated structural changes.
Nasal Polyps
CT imaging can help identify soft tissue changes within the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses that may be associated with polyps.
Sinus Drainage Obstruction
The scan can assess the pathways through which the sinuses normally drain and help identify anatomical narrowing or obstruction.
Anatomical Variations
NCCT PNS can illustrate differences in sinus and nasal morphology that could cause symptoms and/or serve as pertinent for surgical planning.
Facial and Sinus Trauma
The examination provides detailed visualization of facial bones and can help identify fractures or other traumatic changes involving the sinus region.
Benefits of NCCT PNS
Detailed evaluation of the paranasal sinuses
Excellent visualization of sinus and facial bone anatomy
Helps identify sinus inflammation and obstruction
Useful for evaluating chronic and recurrent sinus conditions
Supports preoperative planning for selected procedures
Fast and widely available imaging examination
Provides high-resolution cross-sectional images

Test information: Usually, no fasting is required.
Reporting: Within 24 hours*
Usually, no fasting is required before an NCCT PNS examination.
Inform the medical team about any previous surgery, injury, or treatment involving the nose, sinuses, face, or head.
Mention any history of facial trauma, nasal fracture, chronic sinus problems, or previous sinus surgery.
Inform the medical team about your current medicines and supplements.
Inform the medical team if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy, as CT uses ionizing radiation.
Bring previous CT, MRI, X-ray, ultrasound reports, or other relevant medical records for comparison when available.
Remove jewellery, spectacles, hearing aids, hair accessories, and other metallic objects from the head and face area before the scan.
Follow the positioning instructions provided by the CT technologist.
Keep the head and face as still as possible during image acquisition to avoid motion-related image blurring.
Inform the medical team if you have difficulty remaining still or have any condition that may affect positioning during the examination.
The patient’s clinical history, symptoms, previous investigations, and clinical indication for NCCT PNS are reviewed before the examination.
The patient is positioned appropriately on the CT table, with the head aligned according to the PNS imaging protocol.
The CT scanner acquires thin-section images of the paranasal sinuses and surrounding facial structures without intravenous contrast.
Images are obtained to evaluate the frontal, maxillary, ethmoid, and sphenoid sinuses, nasal cavity, sinus drainage pathways, and relevant surrounding bony structures.
The examination may help assess mucosal thickening, sinus opacification, fluid or secretions, drainage pathway obstruction, anatomical variations, polyps, fractures, and other sinus or nasal abnormalities.
Multiplanar reconstructions may be generated to provide detailed assessment of the sinus anatomy and surrounding structures.
NCCT PNS does not require intravenous contrast administration.
The patient is instructed to remain still during image acquisition to maintain image quality.
CT uses ionizing radiation, and the examination is performed using an appropriate imaging protocol based on the clinical indication.
The acquired images are reviewed and interpreted by an experienced radiologist in correlation with the clinical history and available previous investigations.
Appropriate radiation-safety and patient-positioning protocols are followed throughout the examination.
