Sagittal (Temporal Bone) is done at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, an NABL- and NABH-accredited diagnostic centre with superior lab facilities in the field of Radiology / diagnostic imaging. The CT scan of the temporal bone and adjacent tissue also gives very specific images that enable the doctor to look at the ear cavity and rule out any abnormalities or changes that might be occurring in the middle ear, inner ear, or the ear cavity, as well as fractures.
About NCCT Temporal Bone (Sagittal)
Temporal Bone (Sagittal) is a specialized CT scan of the temporal bones (side of the skull), which include important structures relating to hearing and balance. As part of the examination, extra images of the temporal bone anatomy are obtained by high-resolution computed tomography (CT) imaging and sagittal image reconstruction. It may be suggested in patients with suspected bone deformities, chronic ear diseases, temporal bone trauma, or in certain patients with abnormalities that need closer examination of the ear; the patient might be asked for an ear examination.
What is NCCT Temporal Bone (Sagittal)?
It does not employ IV material, but uses X-rays and computers to create a cross-sectional image. Temporal bone includes the structures of the outside and middle ears, the parts of the inner ear, the mastoid air cells, and bone passages of important nerves and blood vessels. Other views were taken, including sagittal views from the side to provide a complementary perspective for sagittal reconstructions useful for viewing other angles for the radiologist to examine the anatomy. The scan procedure and image reconstruction will be affected by the clinical indication and the needs of the student's doctor.
Common Reasons for NCCT Temporal Bone (Sagittal)
Chronic ear disease: Helps to evaluate bony abnormalities associated with a selected chronic ear disease.
Assesses if appropriate for clinical circumstances for suspected cholesteatoma, for associated bony destruction and middle ear pathology.
Abnormal ear conditions: May assist to investigate abnormal conditions of the ears.
Helps identify abnormalities of mastoids (which are air-filled cavities behind the ears).
Middle ear malformations: Close-up picture of the small bones in the middle ear and the bones of the head.
Have the skills to assess some developmental defects of the morphology of the temporal bone – congenital ear abnormalities.
Chronic ear symptoms: May be prescribed whenever clinical signs point to a problem with the bones.
Pre-operative planning: Gives anatomic information before chosen ear/skull base surgery.
Follow-up of known abnormalities: May re-evaluate some types of temporal bone disease, if indicated by a specialist.
Conditions Evaluated
Middle Ear Abnormalities
Computerized tomography (CT) provides detailed images of the middle ear and region of the bones around the middle ear. It can assist in determining select structural alterations and abnormalities that affect the tiny bones associated with hearing (ossicles).
Cholesteatoma-Related Bone Changes
In a few cases, it will be possible to see the complications of bony damage, or changes caused by the cholesteatoma, with CT. A diagnosis of the disease may be made using other tests and clinical examination.
Mastoid Air Cell Abnormalities
The examination can assess the mastoid air cells for opacification, sclerosis, and other structural changes that may occur with chronic or recurrent ear disease.
Temporal Bone Fractures
The NCCT can be used to identify fractures of the temporal bone, and the relationship between fractures and adjacent structures can be determined. Additional tests (other clinical tests such as hearing/facial nerve, balance) may be necessary.
Ossicular Chain Abnormalities
CT can be used for the evaluation of position and structure of the auditory ossicles in addition to the identification of a few abnormalities that can lead to conductive hearing loss.
Congenital Structural Variations
The examination may show differences in the development of the temporal bone and ears that can be helpful for evaluating and planning treatment by a specialist.
Skull-Base Bony Changes
The scan coverage depends on the clinical indication and may include temporal bone structures and adjacent skull-base bone.
Why Choose Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy?
Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy is a diagnostic center accredited by NABL and NABH and has the most up-to-date range of services in the field of Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, and Pathology under a single roof. All imaging services will be backed by cutting-edge diagnostic technology, scan protocols, and specialists, all of them based on patient-centric care. The purpose of the image is to produce high-quality, diagnostic images that are reported for use in clinical decision-making.
Book Your NCCT Temporal Bone (Sagittal)
For NCCT Temporal Bone (Sagittal) information on appointments and scans, please inquire with Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy if recommended by your doctor. Please bring all prescriptions, CT scan reports from past diagnoses, reports of hearing assessments, and any medical history (if applicable) with you so that the radiology team can assess the clinical need.
Test information: Usually, no fasting is required.
Reporting: Within 24 hours*
Usually, no fasting is required before the scan.
Inform the medical team if you are pregnant or may be pregnant, as CT uses X-rays.
Bring your doctor’s prescription, previous CT scans, hearing assessment reports, and relevant ear examination records, if available.
Inform the medical team about any previous ear surgery, temporal bone injury, or implanted hearing device.
Remove earrings, spectacles, hearing aids, and other metal objects around the head and ears before scanning. Inform the team if any device cannot be removed.
Follow the radiology team’s instructions and keep your head still during image acquisition.
The scan is performed without intravenous contrast material unless otherwise specifically advised.

The radiology team reviews the prescription, medical history, and previous imaging or hearing assessment reports, if available.
The patient lies on the CT table, and the head is positioned to obtain detailed images of the temporal bones.
The scan is performed without intravenous contrast material.
CT images are acquired using X-rays, with high-resolution imaging and sagittal reconstructions to provide additional views of the temporal bone structures.
The patient must remain still during image acquisition to minimise motion artefacts.
The radiologist reviews the images for relevant bony abnormalities, including fractures, changes in the middle ear structures, mastoid air cells, and the small bones involved in hearing.
The findings are interpreted alongside the patient’s symptoms and clinical examination. Additional tests may be recommended if further assessment of hearing, balance, or soft tissues is needed.
