A non-invasive ultrasound procedure known as Colour Doppler Soft Tissue, which is used to assess blood flow and soft tissues in a specific site on the body. May be used as a diagnostic procedure for lumps, swelling, inflammatory changes, collections and other soft tissue abnormalities, as necessary.

About Colour Doppler Soft Tissue

Colour Doppler Soft Tissue is an ultrasound examination where Doppler ultrasound is performed to assess the blood flow around and in selected abnormalities, and to examine Soft-Tissues. It may also give them some helpful information about the size, location, structure, and vascularity of a lump or lesion, which will help them to decide whether or not the problem needs further investigations.

What Is Colour Doppler Soft Tissue?

Colour Doppler Soft Tissue is an ultrasonic technique which is suitable to present the image of soft tissue and to interpret blood flow through the selected vessels. May be used for superficial lumps or swelling, for possible inflammatory diseases and other abnormalities of the soft tissues. The area being tested will be based upon patient symptoms and the doctor's recommendation.

Common Reasons for Colour Doppler Soft Tissue

  • Evaluation of a lump or swelling in the soft tissues.
  • Assessment of suspected inflammation or infection.
  • Examination of a suspected abscess or fluid collection.
  • Evaluation of blood flow within or around a soft tissue lesion.
  • Investigation of pain or tenderness in a specific area.
  • Assessment of a suspected vascular abnormality.
  • Further evaluation of an abnormality identified during clinical examination or conventional ultrasound.
  • Follow-up of selected soft tissue abnormalities when clinically indicated.

Conditions and Abnormalities Evaluated

Soft Tissue Lumps and Masses

In certain cases, the colour Doppler ultrasound may help to determine the blood supply, internal structure, size, and position of soft tissue lumps. Further investigations will be done if needed based on the results.

Inflammatory Changes

The test may be useful for identifying changes in inflammation and may be used to measure the extent of increased blood flow in tissues with inflammation.

Abscesses and Fluid Collections

Acoustic means can be used to identify some fluid collections, such as if there is a suspected abscess. Doppler imaging can give an indication of blood flow around the affected area.

Vascular Abnormalities

In certain soft tissue abnormalities and/or vascular lesions, colour Doppler can provide additional assistance in the evaluation of blood flow.

Other Soft Tissue Abnormalities

Selected cysts, swelling, and other surface changes in the tissues (under the condition and indication) can be evaluated in examination (in some cases).
